20067USBCWomensChampionshipLogo.jpg Lori Tapparo of Strasburg, Colo., has her fingers crossed. With only three weeks left in the 2007 United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships, Tapparo is one of only two competitors with top three scores in three events.

Tapparo fired a 661 series to propel her and partner Barbara Whitehead of Bennett, Colo., to first place in Division 2 Doubles (299-338 average) with 1,138.

In the team event, Tapparo shot 604, which moved her team, Prairie Pals, into third place in Division 3 (651-745 average) with 2,379.

Tapparo's high marks also have her near the top in Division 1 All-Events (170-189 average). Tapparo's two-day total of 1,788 ranks her second behind Veronica Minotti of Oviedo, Fla., who shot 1,867.

As each day passes, Tapparo, an avid bowler for 16 years, knows she is a little closer to accomplishing a great feat.

"It's very nerve wracking," said Tapparo, who has only competed in one other Women's Championships. "I'm constantly checking the leader board on bowl.com to see if the scores hold up. It would be so awesome if they did!"

Tapparo was a member of a team that took home a state championship in Colorado, but she has won on the national stage.

"I have always bowled consistently," Tapparo said, "but to do so well in only my second appearance at a national championship felt great. It was a little surprising."

Tapparo credits her husband Kenny who made the trip to Charlotte, N.C., to encourage his wife.

"We had a late squad time for doubles and singles," Tapparo said. "So by the time singles competition began it was getting pretty late. My husband kept me focused and bowling consistently.

"We looked at the oil pattern of the lanes on bowl.com before we got to the tournament. It turned out not many other women were using my line. I just bowled consistent, stayed on the same mark and it held."

The Women's Championships, which is the largest participatory sporting event in the world for women, will continue through July 2. Northcross Lanes hosts the team event while doubles and singles competition takes place at AMF Carolina Lanes in Matthews, N.C.

The USBC Women's Championships is sponsored by Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus Hotel/Casinos in Reno, Nev., as well as Kegel, the official lane maintenance provider.
