Amateur Minier beats Ozio to win PBA Senior U.S. Open, presented by Suncoast

In a battle of two Texans, it was an amateur who came out on top over a Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Hall of Famer in the 2007 PBA Senior U.S. Open presented by Suncoast.
Rick Minier (Houston, Texas) put together a string of six consecutive strikes to defeat David Ozio (Beaumont, Texas), 240-223, in the title match of the stepladder finals to capture his first career PBA Senior Tour title.

The second-seeded Ozio opened the title match with three strikes while the top seed Minier spared in the first and doubled in the next two frames.
It was in the fourth frame where the tide of the match changed. After leaving a 10-pin on his first shot, Ozio, who won the 2004 PBA Senior U.S. Open, missed the spare conversion leaving an open frame in the midst of Minier’s six-strike string.
Minier’s string was snapped in the eighth with an open frame of his own, but the amateur struck in the ninth and with his opening shot in the 10th to close out the match and capture his first career title.
“This is definitely the biggest title I’ve ever won. I’ve won some nice tournaments, but this is the biggest,” said Minier. “I was nervous out there. I posted a good shot every frame except for the eighth when I hung up the split. But this is hard to top. It doesn’t get any better than this.
In the semifinal match Ozio knocked off two-time defending U.S. Open champion Tom Baker (King, N.C.), 226-196. Baker was in trouble after five frames, picking up only two strikes to Ozio’s four. Ozio allowed Baker back into the match with three spares in frames six through nine, but closed the door with a double in 10th frame.
In the first stepladder match Baker defeated the fourth seed Bob Handley (Winter Park, Fla.), 239-215. Baker used strikes in five of the first six frames and was aided by a Handley open in the sixth to take the final’s first match.
With the win Minier takes home $20,000 but no berth into the 2008 PBA Tournament of Champions due to his amteur status. Ozio earns $11,000 for second. Baker earns $7,000 and Handley $5,500 for their third and fourth place finishes, respectively.
The PBA Senior Tour next heads to Klamath Falls, Ore., for the PBA Senior Epicenter Classic. June 24-27.

Tom Baker picked a good time to get hot on the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Tour. After winning five PBA Senior Tour titles the last two years and the last two PBA Senior Player of the Year awards, Baker was having what some considered a down year with no title match appearances.
After finishing the first day of qualifying of the PBA Senior U.S. Open presented by Suncoast in 46th, Baker has served notice to the rest of the field he intends to make it three straight U.S. Open victories, jumping to the top of the leaderboard at the conclusion of 18 games of qualifying.
Thursday, Baker reiterated his statement by rolling through the first of three eight-game round-robin match play blocks as the only bowler with an undefeated record and an eight-game pinfall of 1,747, with 30 pins being awarded for each match play win and 15 for each tie, to give Baker a 35-game total pinfall of 8,119.
"I feel very fortunate to be where I'm at. The lanes were very different today and I got some very fortunate breaks," said Baker (King, N.C.). "Any time I needed a strike to win a match, I got it. I never shot anything big, but I never shot anything bad. The reaction was different on each pair of lanes. When you moved to the next, it was like starting all over again."
Twenty pins behind Baker is amateur Rick Minier, who posted the rounds highest pinfall of 1,953 while going 5-3 to finish with a total pinfall of 8,099. Minier (Houston, Texas) entered match play in 16th, 221 pins behind then-leader Rohn Morton.
David Ozio (Beaumont, Texas), left, who posted the highest pinfall in the morning's cashers qualifying round to move from 57th to inside the match play cut at 14th, continued his rise to the top, going 6-2 in match play with 1,821 to finish with 8,021.
A second amateur and Las Vegas resident, Terry Leong, rounds out the top four. Leong went 7-1 through match play to finish with 8,014.
Rohn Morton (Vancouver, Wash.) is fifth with a 3-5 record and 1,690 to finish with 7,997.
All 24 bowlers will return Friday at 7 a.m. PST for the second of three eight-game round-robin match play blocks with the final block scheduled to begin at Noon. At the conclusion of the final block, the top four bowlers will advance to the stepladder finals slated to begin at 3:30 p.m. with the winner taking home $20,000 and a berth into the 2008 PBA Tournament of Champions.

A Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Major may be just the thing that Tom Baker needs to return to the form that captured him the last two PBA Senior Player of the Year awards.
Baker, who has also won the last two Senior U.S. Opens, leads the PBA Senior U.S. Open presented by Suncoast after 18 games of qualifying at the Suncoast Bowling Center.
After beginning Tuesday, the second day of qualifying, in 46th, Baker jumped to seventh before completing his run to the top on Wednesday with an 18-game pinfall of 4,156.
"I feel like I've been bowling well all year and for some reason I have a lot of good luck here," said Baker (King, N.C.). "This year it will be a lot harder to win again because the competition is so stiff and the lanes are driving the scores up. But that is why we are here, the competition.
Baker began his block with his high score of the day, 256, and followed it up with scores of 237 and 248. He concluded the block with games of 226, 234 and 228 to finish with a six-game block of 1,429, the top score of the day.
"It's just a matter of carrying the shot out there. Monday I bowled just as well, but I left a lot of 10-pins, which was very frustrating. On Tuesday I switched balls to a Total Inferno and shot 278 and 268 in my final two games. I think the key is not giving the pocket away and keeping it on line," added Baker.
In second is local favorite Kerry Painter, just 21 pins behind Baker. Painter (Henderson, Nev.), who is in his first year on the PBA Senior Tour, compiled the day's second-highest six-game pinfall,1,415, to improve seven spots from ninth.
Tuesday's leader Tim Miller (Irving, Texas), is third with 4,134 after finishing Wednesday with a 1,292 six-game pinfall and leads all amateurs.
Ted Staikoff (Black Hawk, S.D.) is fourth with 4,107 while Monday's leader, Kevin Croucher (Grants Pass, Ore.) rounds out the top five with 4,094, tops for the A squad.
The top 25 percent of the field advance to an additional nine-game qualifying round Thursday morning at 7 a.m. PST. The field will then be cut to the top 24 for round robin match play which gets underway Thursday at 2 p.m.

Tim Miller had a list of goals entering the 2007 Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior U.S. Open presented by Suncoast. Miller (Irving, Texas) entered the day sixth overall after finishing second in the B squad Monday behind fellow amateur Avery LeBlanc (Lexington, Tenn.). Miller's six-game pinfall of 1,460 on Tuesday was the highest of the day and gave him an overall 12-game pinfall of 2,842.
The Texan posted scores of 244 and 183 in his first two games before jumping to 278 in the third. Miller then finished the block by averaging 252.67 over his final three games including a 279 in his sixth.
"I set a couple of goals coming into this thing and I'm close to my first goal of making the cut," said Miller. "One of the things I focused on today was not missing any 10 pins and I didn't miss any. The lanes were a little tighter and I had to play a little straighter. Tomorrow will be a little different, I expect most of the oil to be worn off and I really won't know how the lanes will play until practice beforehand."
Fifty-seven pins behind in second is Bob Handley (Winter Park, Fla.) with 2,785. Handley led the C squad on the day with 1,415.
Making the big jump on the day was Sam Zurich (Grant, Fla.) who entered the day 48th and ended in third. Zurich, who won the third event of the season, the 2007 PBA Senior Northern Illinois Classic, posted a six-game pinfall of 1,454 to improve to 2,766 overall.
Monday's leader Kevin Croucher (Grants Pass, Ore.), still leads the A squad and is fourth with 2,765 after finishing Tuesday with a 1,344 six-game pinfall.
Two-time defending PBA Senior U.S. Open champion and two-time defending PBA Senior Player of the Year Tom Baker (King, N.C.) is seventh with 2,727 after finishing Monday tied for 46th.
All 290 bowlers return Wednesday for the final of the three six-game qualifying blocks, with C squad beginning action at 7 a.m. PST. The top 25 percent of the field after the first 18 games of qualifying will advance to an additional nine-game qualifying round Thursday morning. The field will then be cut to the top 24 for round robin match play which gets underway Thursday at 2 p.m. PST.

In a tournament that requires 51 games over five days for a bowler to even qualify for the four-bowler stepladder final, Kevin Croucher knows that leading the first day in the 2007 Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior U.S. Open presented by Suncoast isn't something to get too excited about. Croucher, who is still looking for his first career PBA Senior title, got out to a quick start firing a six-game pinfall of 1,421 in the first block of the day.
"This is the U.S. Open and it's a very long format, so the people who make fewer mistakes are going to do well," said Croucher (Grants Pass, Ore.) "Everyone is going to have their strikes, but spares are at a premium. You have to convert them to stay alive."
Croucher made a quick jump atop the leaderboard by posting his two highest scores, 258 and 268, in the first two games. After dropping a 195 in his third game, Croucher rebounded with scores of 227, 252 and 221.
"It's the first day and usually for the A squad the lanes are a little tighter. You have to throw the ball a little more direct and everybody basically tries the same thing, so the key is not making mistakes and throwing as many good shots as you can," added Croucher, who has finished in the top 12 three times this season.
In second place is Rohn Morton (Vancouver, Wash.), who also bowled in the day's first block, just four pins behind Croucher. Morton stayed consistently close to his 236.17 average over his six games, scoring between 236-248 in five of his six games.
Randy Niehaus (Rockford, Ill.) led C squad on the day to finish third on the day with 1,389, rolling a 259 in his fifth game to hold off 60-year old Dave Bernhardt (Shelby Township, Mich.), who is fifth with 1,384.
Amateurs occupy the top two spots in the B squad as Avery LeBlanc (Lexington, Tenn.) is fourth with 1,385 and Tim Miller (Irving, Texas) is sixth with 1,382.
Defending PBA Senior U.S. Open champion and two-time defending PBA Senior Player of the Year Tom Baker (King, N.C.) is tied for 46th with 1,313.
All 290 bowlers return Tuesday for the second of three six-game qualifying blocks, with B squad beginning action at 7 a.m. PST. The third six-game block will take place Wednesday. The top 25 percent of the field after the first 18 games of qualifying will advance to an additional nine-game qualifying round Thursday morning. The field will then be cut to the top 24 for round robin match play which gets underway Thursday at 2 p.m. PT.

In a battle of two Texans, it was an amateur who came out on top over a Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Hall of Famer in the 2007 PBA Senior U.S. Open presented by Suncoast. Rick Minier (Houston, Texas) put together a string of six consecutive strikes to defeat David Ozio (Beaumont, Texas), 240-223, in the title match of the stepladder finals to capture his first career PBA Senior Tour title.

The second-seeded Ozio opened the title match with three strikes while the top seed Minier spared in the first and doubled in the next two frames.
It was in the fourth frame where the tide of the match changed. After leaving a 10-pin on his first shot, Ozio, who won the 2004 PBA Senior U.S. Open, missed the spare conversion leaving an open frame in the midst of Minier’s six-strike string.
Minier’s string was snapped in the eighth with an open frame of his own, but the amateur struck in the ninth and with his opening shot in the 10th to close out the match and capture his first career title.
“This is definitely the biggest title I’ve ever won. I’ve won some nice tournaments, but this is the biggest,” said Minier. “I was nervous out there. I posted a good shot every frame except for the eighth when I hung up the split. But this is hard to top. It doesn’t get any better than this.
In the semifinal match Ozio knocked off two-time defending U.S. Open champion Tom Baker (King, N.C.), 226-196. Baker was in trouble after five frames, picking up only two strikes to Ozio’s four. Ozio allowed Baker back into the match with three spares in frames six through nine, but closed the door with a double in 10th frame.
In the first stepladder match Baker defeated the fourth seed Bob Handley (Winter Park, Fla.), 239-215. Baker used strikes in five of the first six frames and was aided by a Handley open in the sixth to take the final’s first match.
With the win Minier takes home $20,000 but no berth into the 2008 PBA Tournament of Champions due to his amteur status. Ozio earns $11,000 for second. Baker earns $7,000 and Handley $5,500 for their third and fourth place finishes, respectively.
The PBA Senior Tour next heads to Klamath Falls, Ore., for the PBA Senior Epicenter Classic. June 24-27.

Baker intends to make it three straight Senior U.S. Open victories
Tom Baker picked a good time to get hot on the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Tour. After winning five PBA Senior Tour titles the last two years and the last two PBA Senior Player of the Year awards, Baker was having what some considered a down year with no title match appearances. After finishing the first day of qualifying of the PBA Senior U.S. Open presented by Suncoast in 46th, Baker has served notice to the rest of the field he intends to make it three straight U.S. Open victories, jumping to the top of the leaderboard at the conclusion of 18 games of qualifying.
Thursday, Baker reiterated his statement by rolling through the first of three eight-game round-robin match play blocks as the only bowler with an undefeated record and an eight-game pinfall of 1,747, with 30 pins being awarded for each match play win and 15 for each tie, to give Baker a 35-game total pinfall of 8,119.
"I feel very fortunate to be where I'm at. The lanes were very different today and I got some very fortunate breaks," said Baker (King, N.C.). "Any time I needed a strike to win a match, I got it. I never shot anything big, but I never shot anything bad. The reaction was different on each pair of lanes. When you moved to the next, it was like starting all over again."
Twenty pins behind Baker is amateur Rick Minier, who posted the rounds highest pinfall of 1,953 while going 5-3 to finish with a total pinfall of 8,099. Minier (Houston, Texas) entered match play in 16th, 221 pins behind then-leader Rohn Morton.
David Ozio (Beaumont, Texas), left, who posted the highest pinfall in the morning's cashers qualifying round to move from 57th to inside the match play cut at 14th, continued his rise to the top, going 6-2 in match play with 1,821 to finish with 8,021.A second amateur and Las Vegas resident, Terry Leong, rounds out the top four. Leong went 7-1 through match play to finish with 8,014.
Rohn Morton (Vancouver, Wash.) is fifth with a 3-5 record and 1,690 to finish with 7,997.
All 24 bowlers will return Friday at 7 a.m. PST for the second of three eight-game round-robin match play blocks with the final block scheduled to begin at Noon. At the conclusion of the final block, the top four bowlers will advance to the stepladder finals slated to begin at 3:30 p.m. with the winner taking home $20,000 and a berth into the 2008 PBA Tournament of Champions.

Two-time defending Senior U.S. Open champion Baker back in familiar position
A Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Major may be just the thing that Tom Baker needs to return to the form that captured him the last two PBA Senior Player of the Year awards.Baker, who has also won the last two Senior U.S. Opens, leads the PBA Senior U.S. Open presented by Suncoast after 18 games of qualifying at the Suncoast Bowling Center.
After beginning Tuesday, the second day of qualifying, in 46th, Baker jumped to seventh before completing his run to the top on Wednesday with an 18-game pinfall of 4,156.
"I feel like I've been bowling well all year and for some reason I have a lot of good luck here," said Baker (King, N.C.). "This year it will be a lot harder to win again because the competition is so stiff and the lanes are driving the scores up. But that is why we are here, the competition.
Baker began his block with his high score of the day, 256, and followed it up with scores of 237 and 248. He concluded the block with games of 226, 234 and 228 to finish with a six-game block of 1,429, the top score of the day.
"It's just a matter of carrying the shot out there. Monday I bowled just as well, but I left a lot of 10-pins, which was very frustrating. On Tuesday I switched balls to a Total Inferno and shot 278 and 268 in my final two games. I think the key is not giving the pocket away and keeping it on line," added Baker.
In second is local favorite Kerry Painter, just 21 pins behind Baker. Painter (Henderson, Nev.), who is in his first year on the PBA Senior Tour, compiled the day's second-highest six-game pinfall,1,415, to improve seven spots from ninth.
Tuesday's leader Tim Miller (Irving, Texas), is third with 4,134 after finishing Wednesday with a 1,292 six-game pinfall and leads all amateurs.
Ted Staikoff (Black Hawk, S.D.) is fourth with 4,107 while Monday's leader, Kevin Croucher (Grants Pass, Ore.) rounds out the top five with 4,094, tops for the A squad.
The top 25 percent of the field advance to an additional nine-game qualifying round Thursday morning at 7 a.m. PST. The field will then be cut to the top 24 for round robin match play which gets underway Thursday at 2 p.m.

Amateur Tim Miller leads PBA Senior U.S. Open after Day Two Qualifying
Tim Miller had a list of goals entering the 2007 Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior U.S. Open presented by Suncoast. Miller's six-game pinfall of 1,460 on Tuesday was the highest of the day and gave him an overall 12-game pinfall of 2,842.
The Texan posted scores of 244 and 183 in his first two games before jumping to 278 in the third. Miller then finished the block by averaging 252.67 over his final three games including a 279 in his sixth.
"I set a couple of goals coming into this thing and I'm close to my first goal of making the cut," said Miller. "One of the things I focused on today was not missing any 10 pins and I didn't miss any. The lanes were a little tighter and I had to play a little straighter. Tomorrow will be a little different, I expect most of the oil to be worn off and I really won't know how the lanes will play until practice beforehand."
Fifty-seven pins behind in second is Bob Handley (Winter Park, Fla.) with 2,785. Handley led the C squad on the day with 1,415.
Making the big jump on the day was Sam Zurich (Grant, Fla.) who entered the day 48th and ended in third. Zurich, who won the third event of the season, the 2007 PBA Senior Northern Illinois Classic, posted a six-game pinfall of 1,454 to improve to 2,766 overall.
Monday's leader Kevin Croucher (Grants Pass, Ore.), still leads the A squad and is fourth with 2,765 after finishing Tuesday with a 1,344 six-game pinfall.
Two-time defending PBA Senior U.S. Open champion and two-time defending PBA Senior Player of the Year Tom Baker (King, N.C.) is seventh with 2,727 after finishing Monday tied for 46th.
All 290 bowlers return Wednesday for the final of the three six-game qualifying blocks, with C squad beginning action at 7 a.m. PST. The top 25 percent of the field after the first 18 games of qualifying will advance to an additional nine-game qualifying round Thursday morning. The field will then be cut to the top 24 for round robin match play which gets underway Thursday at 2 p.m. PST.

In a tournament that requires 51 games over five days for a bowler to even qualify for the four-bowler stepladder final, Kevin Croucher knows that leading the first day in the 2007 Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior U.S. Open presented by Suncoast isn't something to get too excited about. Picture courtesy of PBA LLC. Croucher, who is still looking for his first career PBA Senior title, got out to a quick start firing a six-game pinfall of 1,421 in the first block of the day.
"This is the U.S. Open and it's a very long format, so the people who make fewer mistakes are going to do well," said Croucher (Grants Pass, Ore.) "Everyone is going to have their strikes, but spares are at a premium. You have to convert them to stay alive."
Croucher made a quick jump atop the leaderboard by posting his two highest scores, 258 and 268, in the first two games. After dropping a 195 in his third game, Croucher rebounded with scores of 227, 252 and 221.
"It's the first day and usually for the A squad the lanes are a little tighter. You have to throw the ball a little more direct and everybody basically tries the same thing, so the key is not making mistakes and throwing as many good shots as you can," added Croucher, who has finished in the top 12 three times this season.
In second place is Rohn Morton (Vancouver, Wash.), who also bowled in the day's first block, just four pins behind Croucher. Morton stayed consistently close to his 236.17 average over his six games, scoring between 236-248 in five of his six games.
Randy Niehaus (Rockford, Ill.) led C squad on the day to finish third on the day with 1,389, rolling a 259 in his fifth game to hold off 60-year old Dave Bernhardt (Shelby Township, Mich.), who is fifth with 1,384.
Amateurs occupy the top two spots in the B squad as Avery LeBlanc (Lexington, Tenn.) is fourth with 1,385 and Tim Miller (Irving, Texas) is sixth with 1,382.
Defending PBA Senior U.S. Open champion and two-time defending PBA Senior Player of the Year Tom Baker (King, N.C.) is tied for 46th with 1,313.
All 290 bowlers return Tuesday for the second of three six-game qualifying blocks, with B squad beginning action at 7 a.m. PST. The third six-game block will take place Wednesday. The top 25 percent of the field after the first 18 games of qualifying will advance to an additional nine-game qualifying round Thursday morning. The field will then be cut to the top 24 for round robin match play which gets underway Thursday at 2 p.m. PT.
