USBC Women's Championships competitors team up to fight breast cancer

20067USBCWomensChampionshipLogo.jpg For the past two and a half months thousands of women bowlers have contributed to a very worthy cause by participating in a "Bowl for the Cure" raffle at the 2007 United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships.

Nearly $21,000 was raised for Susan G. Komen For the Cure through a raffle during each team squad at Northcross Lanes in Huntersville, N.C. Participants donated $1 to help cure breast cancer and a chance to win a shiny pink "Bowl for the Cure" Viz-a-Ball.

As one of USBC's official charities, more than $6 million has been raised for Bowler for the Cure since 2000 through various charitable events and fundraisers at the local, state and national levels.

"The Bowl for the Cure campaign has been such a great success this year," said tournament manager Julie Piekarski. "It's heartwarming that so many women have come together for such a worthwhile cause."

Like millions of Americans, Janice Beecham's life has been hit hard by cancer. Her mother, Marabell Pollock, an avid bowler and youth bowling advocate in Florida, fought lung cancer before passing away 17 years ago. In addition, Beecham's 25-year-old daughter, Kim, is a cancer survivor.

So it was only fitting that the Concord, N.C., competitor won the Bowl for the Cure ball Wednesday night at the Women's Championships.

"Winning the ball means a lot to me," said Beecham, an active participant with Relay for Life in the Charlotte, N.C., area. "I always give money to cancer research.

"I was only going to buy one Bowl for the Cure ticket, but a second dollar bill fell out of my pocket. And it turned out that the second ticket was the one that won the ball. Everyone was telling me it was meant to be."

Beecham wore her mother's favorite earrings while competing in the singles/doubles event Thursday, one day before the anniversary of her mother's death.

"They bring me good luck," Beecham said.

The Women's Championships, which is the largest participatory sporting event in the world for women, will continue through July 2. Northcross Lanes hosts the team event while doubles and singles competition takes place at AMF Carolina Lanes in Matthews, N.C.

The USBC Women's Championships is sponsored by Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus Hotel/Casinos in Reno, Nev., as well as Kegel, the official lane maintenance provider.
