Quarry and Smith take different routes to win in Tamworth

     Mike Quarry and Jemma Smith took different routes to win the 14th and penultimate ranking event of the 2007 Brunswick Team England season, the Tamworth Open Singles at Strykers Bowl in Tamworth.

    World Championship silver medalist Quarry (in Doubles with Daniel Stride) led from start to finish posting 1433 in six games qualifying, a full 107 pins better than second placed Leon Devlin and the rest of the field.

    The first cut fell at 200.8 average – Mark A Smith, who promptly shot the best block in round 2 of 931 to shoot from 22nd to fourth place.

    In the round robin final, Quarry began 286, 248 to establish an almost unassailable lead. Steve Thornton improved his chances of being the number 1 ranked bowler in England with a move from 10th to third place in the final behind Leon Devlin.

     In the ladies Nicki Ainge (1359) only just edged Finny Banks (1335) to the lead in qualifying with Jo Cundy (formerly Harries) third (1306). More of the same in round 2 with Jemma Smith moving into third.

    The title literally went to the wire as Jemma shot 278 final game against Jo Cundy, while Nicki edged Finny 229-220. The result was a 2 pin victory for Jemma. Zara Glover continues to head the rankings 10 points ahead of Finny Banks.

    The final BTE event of the season, the English Open, is also the final event of the European Bowling Tour and will be played at Lakeside Nuneaton from December 5-9.
