2007PBARPIEddieGraham_small.jpg Eddie Graham captured his first career Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Regional Tour Major title and earned a berth in the 2008 H&R Block Tournament of Champions, defeating Vince Wood, 180-162, to win the 2007 Regional Players Invitational at the National Bowling Stadium.

The win was Graham’s fourth career PBA Regional Tour title and was good for $10,000. He will compete in his first career Tournament of Champions in January, one of four Majors on the Denny’s PBA Tour.

The 42-year-old Graham (Centerville, Ohio) overcame John May in the semifinal in a roll off after the two tied at 193. He then denied the 29-year-old Wood (Moreno Valley, Calif.) his first career PBA Regional Tour title.

Graham, who qualified eighth after 18 games, was one of just two higher seeds to survive the best-of-seven games Round of 16. The only other one of the top nine seeds to advance out of the first round was No. 4 Kip Roberts.

After a 4-2 win over Craig Tuholski (Washougal, Wash.), Graham had to face PBA Hall of Famer and 20-time Denny’s PBA Tour titlist Wayne Webb (Sacramento, Calif.). After dropping the first game of the best-of-five match, Graham rattled off three consecutive wins with games of 256, 225 and 237 to win the match.

He then took down the former exempt bowler May (Lincoln Town, N.C.) in the one-game semifinal match before winning the low scoring title match over Wood.

The Regional Players Invitational, one of two Majors on the 2007-08 PBA Regional Tour schedule, featured eight bowlers from each of the PBA’s seven regions.

Daugherty leads top 16 into match play in PBA Regional Players Championship

2007RPITomDaugherty.jpg Tom Daugherty averaged 229.33 over his nine games Wednesday to take the overall lead heading into match play in the 2007 Regional Players Invitational (RPI) at the National Bowling Stadium, one of two Majors on the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Regional Tour.

Daugherty led the 56-bowler field over two days and 18 games of qualifying with a 4,043 18-game pinfall, good for a 224.61 average. The RPI features nine bowlers from each of the PBA’s seven regions battling it out for the $10,000 top prize and a berth in the 2008 H&R Block Tournament of Champions, one of four Majors on the Denny’s PBA Tour.

The 32-year-old Daugherty (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) was fourth after the first day of qualifying, but caught Tuesday’s leader Jon Brandon, who finished the day second. Daugherty owns three PBA Regional Tour titles but is still looking for his first Major.

The top 16 advanced to Thursday’s match play which features a best-of-five-games Round of 16, a best-of-three games Round of 8 and single-game matches to determine the finalists, who will bowl one game Thursday evening for the title.

Brandon (Santa Clarita, Calif.) finished second with 3,992 while Thomas Hess (Urbandale, Iowa) finished third with 3,918. Kip Roberts (Mechanisville, Va.) and Joe Paluszek (Bensalem, Pa.) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Two PBA Hall of Famers made the final 16. Mark Williams (Beaumont, Texas), a seven-time Denny’s PBA Tour titlist, finished 11th with 3,794, while 20-time titlist Wayne Webb (Sacramento, Calif.) earned the final spot in match play, finishing 16th with 3,754. Webb finished two pins head of Hugh Miller (Centralia, Wash.) for the final spot.

Match play gets underway Thursday morning at 9 a.m. PST at the National Bowling Stadium.

Brandon leads 2007 PBA Regional Players Championship after Day One

Jon Brandon averaged 227.67 over the first nine games of qualifying Tuesday to take the lead after day one of the 2007 Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Regional Players Invitational (RPI) at the National Bowling Stadium.

Brandon, who is currently fifth in the PBA West Region standings, leads the 56-bowler field heading into the final nine games of qualifying. One of two Majors on the PBA Regional Tour, the event features nine bowlers from each of the PBA’s seven regions.

The winner will receive $10,000 and a berth in the 2008 H&R Block Tournament of Champions in January, one of four Majors on the Denny’s PBA Tour.

The 32-year-old Brandon (Santa Clarita, Calif.) is looking for his first PBA Regional Tour title following three career second-place finishes. He used a conservative approach Tuesday and a late change in strategy to take the lead.

“Basically, I just tried to play the lanes as straight as possible for as long as possible. I tried not to cover as many boards throughout the day and just tried to play the lanes straight and direct,” Brandon, who had a 2,049 nine-game pinfall, said. “It worked out the first six games but in games seven and eight it went away and I shot 180 both games. Then I made a big move and played way inside and shot 270 the last game. If I had moved in a couple games earlier I could have scored better, but you take what you can get.”

Thomas Hess (Urbandale, Iowa) is right behind Brandon in second with 2,004 while Eddie Graham (Centerville, Ohio) is third with 1,979. Tom Daugherty (Tampa, Fla.) is fourth with 1,979 while Don Allen III (Vancouver, Wash.) rounds out the top five with 1,973.

The field of 56 will return Wednesday for another nine games before the field is cut to the top 16 for single elimination match play on Thursday.

Match play features a best-of-seven games Round of 16 followed by a best-of-five games Round of 8. The Round of 4 Thursday evening features single-game matches with the final two bowling a single match for the title immediately following.
