Jo Harries wins qualifying in Naples; Thomas Gross shoots 300-game

English international Jo Harries won the qualifying in the 7th Memorial Antonio Vendemini at Show Bowl in Naples, Italy. Harries posted the field-best 1451, six-game series, an average of 241,83 average, and received another 60 pins handicap to lead the field after 18 qualifying squads by 68 pins.

The Memorial Vendemini was classed as "Major" on the 2005 European Bowling Tour for offering minimum 50.000 Euro total prize fund. However, mere 140 men (the lowest number of entries for a major) and only 21 women (less than in any other EBT tournament) were interested to participate in the event. The 2005 EBT will consist of 11 majors and 9 regular ranking events offering approx. 950.000 Euro total prize fund (1.23 Million U.S. Dollar).

Trailing Harries by 68 pins to finish in second place was Latvian Nikolay Ovchinnikovs with 1443. Austrian Thomas Gross used a 300-game to help grab the third place with 1424. Rounding out the top 5 were Mai Ginge Jensen, Denmark, with 1422 (including hdcp) and Petri Mannonen, Finland, with 1415.

The top 32 players by qualifying pinfall plus the top-ranked player from each of the 18 qualifying squads not among the top 38 advanced to into the semifinals carrying forward 50% of their respective qualifying pinfall total. Those 56 qualifiers will bowl mere 4 games to cut to the top 8 for the stepladder finals. That means the qualifying has a longer format than the rest of the tournament.
