Peter Ljung wins "Swedish Championships" in Hungarian Open

    Peter Ljung won the "Swedish Championships" at the 2nd Hungarian Open in Budapest. Ljung defeated his compatriot Tony Fransson, 377-354, in the title match to earn 10.000 Euro. In an-all Swedish semifinal the two men had defeated two women, Helen Johnsson (3rd) and Anna Mattsson-Baard (4th). The three PBA professionals in the field, Brian Voss (30th/1146), Robert Smith (32nd/1136) and Mike Machuga (35th/1127) failed to make the cut to the top 16.

    Timo Alho wins qualifying in Hungarian Open; All three PBA pros advanced

    Finn Timo Alho led the top 48 players into the second round at the Hungarian Open in Budapest. Alho felled 1351, an average of 225,17, to lead compatriot Osku Palermaa by 4 pins. 2-time European ranking leader Kamilla Kjeldsen from Denmark (pictured) was the best female bowler in third at 1344 (including 48 handicap).

    One pin behind was the best of three PBA pros, exempt player Mike Machuga, in 4th place at 1343. Also advancing were former U.S. Open champion Robert Smith (21st/1290) and PBA Hall of Famer and winner of the last ranking event in Barcelona, Brian Voss (pictured; 32nd/1275). Poland's Jacek Grotowski took the 40th and final spot with 1266, 211 average. The top 40 after qualifying plus the top 8 from the Desperado Squad will advance to the 2nd round.
