Tomas Leandersson triumphs in Olympia Tournament in Helsingborg

    Olympia Bowling in Helsingborg, Sweden

     Swede Tomas Leandersson (pictured) defeated Timo Alho, Finland, 246-210, in the championship match of the Olympia Tournament, in Helsingborg, Sweden, en route to win the 13th European Bowling Tour event and the 10.000 Euro top prize. It marked the first victory on the EBT for the multiple European and World champion. Alho earned 5.000 Euro for second place.

    Leandersson topped compatriot Mikael Kanold, 207-177, in the first semifinal. Alho eliminated compatriot Osku Palermaa, 237-216. Palermaa, who was looking for his second EBT title this season finished third, while Kanold ended up forth. Both received 2.500 Euro.

    Britt Bröndsted was the top-ranked woman in the field in 15th place, with Helen Johnsson second after finishing 16th.

    32 players heading into Single Elimination finals in Helsingborg

    Finn Pasi Uotila (pictured) set the pace in Round of 40 (players #9 through #48 after qualifying) with 1375 six-game total and an average of 229,17. The 24 will meet the top 8 qualifying leaders in the best-of-five games single elimination finals.

    Pawel Bielski, Poland, took the 24th spot with 1202. Notables that failed to advance were Nick Froggatt (ENG, 26th), Lasse Lintilä (FIN, 31st) and Gery Verbruggen (BEL, 33rd). The two remaining women, Britt Bröndsted, Denmark, and Helen Johnsson, Sweden, will battle it out for the winner of the women's rankings.

    Competition commences with the Round of 32 and bowlers must win best-of-five games matches to advance. After three rounds, the four remaining bowlers determine the champion in one-game head-to-head matches.

    Tomas Leandersson wins qualifying in Helsingborg

     Tomas Leandersson (pictured) remained unchallenged and won the qualifying in the 13 European Bowling Tour event, the Olympia Tournament in Helsingborg, averaging 246,67 over his six games. The 39-year-old righthander who has won numerous medals in FIQTWTBA championships in his career had a high game of 286 and a 209 low game to set the pace with 1480 pinfall total.

    Three of his teammates that won the Team title in the 2003 World Championships followed Leandersson into the finals. Martin Larsen was second with 1452, Anders Öhman 12th with 1333, and tournament organizer Patrick Backe tied for 35th with 1283. Only Martin Blixt failed to advance in 69th place with 1230.

    Thomas Nilsson shot 1260 and beat out Swedish women's national team member Anna Mattsson-Baard for the 48th and final spot in the next round by one pin. The top 8 players earned a bye and will be seeded into the Round of 32, while the players seeded 9-48 will bowl another 6-game block starting from scratch.
