Super Bowl in Canton, Mich. (April 10-July 6, 2008)

2008USBCWCSitiSafiyahAmirahSharonKoh.jpg Team Malaysia breezed into the 2008 United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships wearing bright orange jackets and shirts, but it was their scores that announced their presence, loud and clear. Sharon Koh shone the brightest by taking the early lead in Classic Team, Doubles, Singles and All-Events at Super Bowl Lanes.

R-L Sharon Koh and Siti Safiyah Amirah were top performers for Team Malaysia.

The team moved into first place in Classic Team (946 average & above) with 2,965. The team was led by Zandra Aziela (683), followed by Koh (636), Poh Lai Choy (601), Siti Safiyah Amirah (606) and substitute Mary Davidson of Brodhead, Wis., with 439.

Koh, went on to take the Classic Singles lead with a 728 series and added 677 in doubles to move into the all-events lead with 2,041. Paired with Aziela's 622 in doubles, the duo combined for 1,299 to move into the Classic Doubles lead.

Koh, 20, a left-hander who has been bowling for 11 years, attends a "sports school" called Bukit Jalil, which has helped her hone her bowling skills. She is the reigning Malaysian National Women's Champion, having joined the national elite squad after winning the Masters title at the 2006 World Youth Championships. Koh clinched her second Masters title in the Malaysian National Championships in January.

Amirah also moved into second place in Classic Singles with 672 which included a 286 game, high in the tournament thus far. Amirah's Classic Doubles series of 645, along with Choy's 594, moved the pair into second with 1,239.

"I come from a very sports-minded family," said Amirah, a 17-year-old student who averages 203. "My parents bowled in a league, and I got interested after throwing a few shots. I feel fortunate to be bowling so well at my age."

All four bowlers will be in Detroit a bit longer to compete in the USBC Queens, which begins Saturday at Super Bowl.
