Ohio team takes lead at USBC Women's Championships

Super Bowl in Canton, Mich. (April 10-July 6, 2008)

2008USBCWCBohnZoneChicks.jpg When Leslie Bohn and her teammates arrived in Detroit for the 2008 United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships, they were focused from the very beginning. That focus helped Bohn Zone Chicks of Kettering, Ohio, take the lead in Classic Team on Wednesday.

From left, Kari Watson, Leslie Bohn, Laura Starbuck, Chrissie Kent, Kristin Nieter.

"We never check the scores before we walk into the bowing center," said Bohn, whose husband is PBA Hall of Famer Parker Bohn III. "We just stay focused and try and fill every frame."

Bohn Zone Chicks turned in the highest score of the tournament thus far with a 3,171 total at Super Bowl Lanes. The team was led by Kari Watson with a 752 series and was followed by Kristin Nieter (632), Leslie Bohn (628), Chrissie Kent (589) and Laura Starbuck (570).

"It's nice to have professional bowlers giving you advice when you're bowling," said Kent, whose husband, PBA star Doug Kent, watched the team compete Wednesday night. "They can see things they we can't see. They are so helpful and so sweet."

Watson, a two-time Collegiate Bowler of the Year in 1991 and 1992 at Morehead State, took the lead in Classic All-Events (190 and over average) with a 2,061 nine-game total. Watson followed her 752 team series with 696 in doubles and 613 in singles.

"The lane conditions were wonderful and it helped that we all played the same line," Watson said. "I hope this score holds up, but now I'll sit back and relax until the Queens."

    Wisconsin duo leads Classic Doubles

2008USBCWCGinaDaroszewskiJillAlbrecht.jpg Wisconsin bowlers Gina Daroszewski and Jill Albrecht (l-r) were members of the Women's Championships winning Classic Division team in 2004 and 2002. After moving into first place in Classic Doubles with 1,445, they hope to add another title to their credit.

    Daroszewski, of Franklin, Wis., fired a 748 series (233, 267, 248) while Albrecht, of Wind Lake, Wis., shot 697 (192, 259, 246).

"We've been bowling as doubles partners for 10 years, so we're crossing our fingers this will be our year in doubles," Albrecht said. "At least it's going to give everyone something to shoot for."

Both bowlers struck out in the final two frames of the second game, which was a turning point in their doubles set.

"When we struck out, that gave us a lot of momentum," Daroszewski said. "We really fed off that finish in the second game."
