Powers leads USBC Senior Queens Qualifying

It only took Sharon Powers two frames to realize her game plan for the second round of the 2008 United States Bowling Congress Senior Queens had gone astray.
"I told myself coming into today's round to stay clean and then I had opens in my first two frames," the 51-year-old Lakewood, Colo., resident said. "But then I relaxed and bowled well."
Well enough to race into the 10-game qualifying lead at Skore Lanes here Sunday. After an even-par 1,000 round Saturday, Powers posted games of 191, 259, 188, 268 and 191 for a 1,097 total on the fresh oil condition Sunday morning, giving her a 2,097 two-day total and a 12-pin edge over Patti Schultz of Braidwood, Ill.
Powers' 10-game total was a Senior Queens record, topping the 2,064 totals by Rose Smith in Reno, Nev., in 2006 and Shirley Levens in Tulsa, Okla., in 2005. During her five games Sunday, Powers had a total of five open frames despite her slow start.
"My goal coming in was to qualify in the top 10," Powers said. "Last year, in my first Senior Queens, I finished seventh. All I want to do is get to match play and we'll go from there."
Powers, the long-time USBC Women's Championships doubles partner of USBC Hall of Famer Lorrie Nichols, said the Senior Queens has given her and other women in the 50-plus age group a new lease on their competitive lives.
"Who says we have to stop at age 50," she said. "I'm just glad USBC lowered the age to 50." Prior to 2006, the minimum age to bowl in the Senior Queens was 55.
Schultz, who also sat in second place after the opening five-game round, had "a rough day," in her words.
"It was either over- or under-reaction all day. I couldn't find a pair that was consistent, lane to lane, or anything consistent pair to pair," she said after rolling games of 199, 212, 153, 228 and 202 for 994 and a 2,085 total. "But I'm happy with where I'm at. I wanted to qualify in the top 10 and I'm all right."
An adapted physical education teacher who works with special needs children in the Romeoville-Bolingbrook area southeast of Chicago, Schultz said her biggest problem in dealing with the freshly-oiled lanes Sunday was too much thinking.
"All I was doing was thinking, thinking. Finally I just told myself to throw the ball. After that, I did better," she said.
The top 50 senior women, plus ties, advanced to a third five-game qualifying round Monday morning. The top 31 will then join defending champion Lucy Sandelin of Tampa, Fla., in the three-game, double-elimination match play finals Monday and Tuesday in pursuit of the $3,000 first prize. The tournament concludes Wednesday morning.
