Super Bowl in Canton, Mich. (April 10-July 6, 2008)

When the 2008 United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships leader board posted the new standings, many people saw the name Lucinda Griggie. The one person who did not see the name was Griggie herself.

In fact, her name was not on the leader board just once but four times. Griggie of Charlotte, N.C., took the lead in Division 2 doubles and all-events while also leading two teams into the top 10.

"Me and the rest of the group went home and didn't even pay attention or check the leader board before we left," Griggie said. "I thought I bowled decent but I never knew I was in the lead in any category."

Griggie fired a 567 series in doubles while her partner Christine Wiley shot 569 as the pair totaled 1,136 to overtake the lead in Division 2 Doubles (299-338 combined average). Griggie added 517 in singles and 583 in her first team event for a 1,667 all-events total to give her the lead in that category as well.

"This is the first time I've ever been in the lead," Griggie said. "I put up some good scores but I doubt they will last. But it's nice to say I had my name up there for awhile."

Griggie also made her mark in team event, starting the tournament off by setting the pace for her team, What The World of Charlotte, N.C., with a 583 series. She was followed by Marie Montgomery (512), Brenda Wright (498), Bootnie Gray (471) and Wiley (417). Their team total of 2,481 put them in sixth place in Division 2 (746-845 combined average).

Griggie then proceeded to bowl as a substitute on a friend's team, Just Made Up also from Charlotte. Although her 550 series did not count toward all-events, she helped the team move into third in Division 3 (651-745 combined average) with 2,381. She was joined by Marie Wright (480), Monica Gray (475), Ressie Johnson (449) and Kate McClain (427).

"We are all close friends and they needed a sub," said Griggie. "I'm glad I was able to bowl good enough to help their team move up in the standings."

Also in Division 2 Doubles, Griggie's teammates McClain and Gray moved into third place with a 1,127 total. McClain led the pair with a 600 series while Gray contributed a 527 series. Griggie's other teammate, Monica Gray, shot 520 in doubles and a 546 series in singles to give her an all-events total of 1,541, which was good enough to land her in third place in Division 3 (131-149 average).

In other leader board changes, Laura Wiltshire of Garden City, Mich., and Gayla Barr of Detroit teamed up to move into the lead in Division 1 Doubles (339-378 combined average) with a 1,170 total. Wiltshire led the pair with a 620 series while Barr contributed a 550 series.

Finally, in Division 4 (130 and under average), Kris Romain of Madison, Wis., put together her best outing ever at a USBC Women's Championships. She took second place in singles with a 530 series. She also rolled a 442 series in doubles and a 497 for a 1,469 total and sole possession of first place in all-events.

"This is all too overwhelming for me. I've never even placed before, not even with my team," said Romain, who made her fifth USBC Women's Championship appearance. "Everything was falling for me the past couple of days. I'm just totally speechless right now."
