Canada pair takes Division 1 Doubles lead at USBC Women's Championships

Super Bowl in Canton, Mich. (April 10-July 6, 2008)

2008USBCWCJudyBodashefsky.jpg 2008USBCWCNoraThornton.jpg When Canadian bowlers Judy Bodashefsky (left) and Nora Thornton (right) arrived for the 2008 United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships, they didn't think they would leave Super Bowl Lanes on top of the leader board.

Bodashefsky and Thornton teamed up to move into first place in Division 1 Doubles (339-378 combined average) with a 1,183 total. Thornton led the pair with a 651 series while Bodashefsky contributed 532.

"We checked the leader boards when we first got here, but for some reason we thought the leaders had 1,200," said Bodashefsky, who carries a 168 average. "We thought our score would put us close to the top but not the very top."

Thornton, who carries a 178 average, bowled games of 245, 224 and 182. Bodashefsky's had a slow start with games of 172 and 167 but it was her 193 final game that gave the pair the extra little push to put the duo in first place by 13 pins.

"We work great together as a pair. If I'm struggling and need help she is right there with her comforting advice and I do the same when she is struggling," said Bodashefsky, who has bowled doubles with Thornton for the past four years. "These lanes were tough and we figured out that Nora needed to slow her ball down and I needed to speed my ball up. I guess it worked out well for us."

Bodashefsky, of Bowmanville, Ontario, and Thornton, of Oshawa, Ontario, will make their journey back home and have to wait until another four weeks to see if their score will hold up for the lead. The Women's Championships ends July 6.

"It's a great feeling to be in first place. We are just hoping that our score will hold up," said Bodashefsky.

Canada is one of the record setting nine countries to be represented at the Women's Championships.

Also this weekend Chris Dailey of Campville, Pa., moved into first place in Division 1 All-Events (170-189 average) with a 1,732 nine-game total. She had a 587 series in team, 510 in doubles and 635 in singles. Dailey also took sixth place in Division 1 Singles with games of 203, 253 and 179 for a 635 total.
