Three honored for longtime participation at USBC Women's Championships

    United States

Super Bowl in Canton, Mich. (April 10-July 6, 2008)

As the highlight of the bowling season for thousands of women bowlers, nearly 2,500 participants have shown their dedication to the event by competing in 25 or more United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships. Three of those bowlers, with a combined 142 years of participation, were honored prior to team competition Saturday in the 2008 USBC Women's Championships at Super Bowl.

2008USBCWCDorothySternbergHelenKidwell.jpg Eighty-seven-year-old Dorothy Sternberg of Indianapolis, honored for 52 years, began her foray into the sport with a factory's company team in 1938. The Division IV bowler saw her average rise to 187 over the next 30 years, although it has since downsized -- as has her former use of a 15-pound ball to eight pounds.

Dorothy Sternberg and Helen Kidwell (l-r) of Indianapolis were recognized for 52 years and 40 years, respectively.

"Still, I've passed the love of bowling along to other family members, no matter how old they are," said the retired secretary. "Now even my great-grandsons have begun to bowl."

2008USBCWCJoyceGeorgeson.jpg Denver's Division I's Joyce Georgeson, 76, was presented a plaque for 50 years. Originally hailing from a North Dakota farm, she is now a retired computer programmer. Georgeson not only has a clear recall of each tournament, but also cites which cities hosted them and her team's outfits -- often comparing the skirt-wearing days of just two bowling divisions.

Fifty-year plaque recipient Joyce Georgeson of Denver receives accolades from Women's Championships Tournament Manager James Lamb.

"There used to be a built-in Skit Night held at the conventions for teams who were bidding to hold the next Nationals in their town," she said. "We represented Denver, pushing in 1958 for the tournament to be held there in 1960. When Denver was chosen, we all cheered and threw our Stetsons in the air."

Forty-year recipient Helen Kidwell, a Division II bowler from Indianapolis, worked tirelessly to promote bowling over the years with her husband, Wes, a former American Bowling Congress (ABC) board member. In addition to serving her local Women's International Bowling Congress (WIBC), Helen was also active with the area's Juniors and other youth events. Now retired from the family's automotive electrical business, she bowls regularly with daughters, Beverly and Jill. Jill also received 30-year tournament recognition this year.

"Helen and Wes are known as Mr. and Mrs. Indianapolis back home, and they work hard to make the city a better place," Sternberg said. "It's an honor sharing tonight with her."

    Sternberg contributed 300 (89, 114, 97) to her team's total of 2,049. Georgeson had a series total of 418 (147, 145, 126) in her team's 2,102 finish; Kidwell rolled a 406 series (147, 132, 127) for her team's 2,238.

Among other record holders, 90-year-old Mini Tvaska of St. Petersburg, Fla. competed for the 62nd consecutive time on May 20, breaking the event's all-time record for participation. Morris Plain, N.J. resident Emma Hendrickson, 99, also tied a record for oldest participant held since 1987 by Ethel Brunnick of Santa Monica, Calif., when she competed on April 19 in her 49th consecutive tournament.

2008USBCWCLogo.jpg Presenting sponsors for the 2008 USBC Women's Championships are Eldorado Hotel Casino, Silver Legacy Resort Casino and Circus Circus Reno in Reno, Nev. Other participating sponsors are Kegel, official lane maintenance provider, Shop Canton, Greektown Casino, ABC AirTrans, Max & Erma's Restaurant, Bacardi, Miller Brewing Company, CaraMagno Foods and the Michigan Lottery.
