Three of PBA's Greats gunning for U.S. Open Double

    2008 PBA Senior Tour #5

Suncoast Bowling Center in Las Vegas, Nev. United States (June 15-20, 2008)

Three Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Hall of Famers - Johnny Petraglia, Mark Roth and Steve Cook - would like to add another milestone in bowling history by becoming the first to win a Denny's PBA Tour U.S. Open and a Senior U.S. Open title.

All three bowlers found themselves making the first cut after third round qualifying Wednesday in the PBA Senior U.S. Open presented by Suncoast at the Suncoast Bowling Center.

As one of the most demanding formats in the sport, the field has been cut to 80 players (from an original field of 321) who will bowl another nine games of qualifying Thursday morning. The field will then be narrowed to 24 players for round-robin match play beginning Thursday afternoon.

2008PBAS05JohnnyPetraglia3.jpg Petraglia (left), who won the 1977 U.S. Open, retained his position as the tournament leader after qualifying for the third consecutive day ending with a 4,270 (237.2 average) 18-game pinfall total.

"Hopefully things will continue to go well in tomorrow's qualifying," said the 61-year-old lefthander who owns six Senior Tour and 14 Denny's PBA Tour titles. "Then once you get into match play the goal is to keep bowling well and not worry about what your opponent does. If you're bowling well you're going to win at least half of your matches."

2008PBAS05SteveCook.jpg Cook (right), 51, the 1986 U.S. Open champion, admitted that he's not as prepared as most of the other Senior Tour players. Having only practiced four days before the Senior U.S. Open after a two-month layoff, he is in 18th place after 18 games of qualifying with a pinfall total of 3,897 (216.5average).

"I'm bowling pretty well here but not where I need to be to bowl against these guys," Cook said. "I've left a lot of pins out there. With a long format like this the best prepared bowlers are going to rise to the top. There are a lot of guys much more prepared and in a much better position to do well than I am."

2008PBAS05MarkRoth.jpg Roth (left), who won the 1984 U.S. Open, is currently in 39th place with a 3,849 pinfall total (213.8 average).

"The sport has changed so much since I won the U.S. Open and the change in equipment has been the biggest factor," said the 57-year-old Roth. "Every week is a much bigger challenge because there are so many variables. Back then most centers were still wood lanes and you had plastic or urethane balls. Now, everything is synthetic and you have to stay on top of all the ball technology."

Roth, with two Senior Tour titles to his credit, is tied with Pete Weber and ranks third in all-time Denny's PBA Tour wins with 34.

Match play will continue on Friday which will determine the top four bowlers who will compete in a traditional stepladder finale which gets underway at 6:30 p.m. EDT (3:30 p.m. PDT) on Friday.
