Petraglia marches on in PBA Senior U.S. Open

After nine games in the final qualifying round and eight games of round-robin match play Thursday, the PBA Hall of Famer leads with an 8,368 pinfall total and a 6-1-1 match play record which awards 30 bonus pins for a match win and 15 for a tie.
"I struggled a little bit early today (in qualifying) but the adjustment I made was changing my hand position and I bowled well the last three games," Petraglia said. "I'm not having to make any radical adjustments in match play but I was running out of gas toward the end and fortunately I was able to finish on the pair I started on so I knew how to play it."
Today was the toughest test for the 24 remaining players, having bowled the final nine-game qualifying block, which cut the field from 80 to 24 players, in addition to the first eight-game match play round.
Petraglia leads Bob Handley (left) of Winter Park, Fla., in second by 302 pins. Handley, a one-time Senior Tour and five-time Denny's PBA Tour titlist, has an 8,066 pinfall total with a 6-2 match play record.
"The tournament has been kind of up and down for me," Handley said. "My first three games in qualifying I had 814 then I started struggling. I've had some good games and some bad games. I tried some different things in match play and they seemed to work."
Petraglia, along with fellow hall of famers Mark Roth (15th) and Steve Cook (17th), is trying to become the first player to win both the Denny's PBA Tour U.S. Open and the Senior U.S. Open.
All 24 players will return Friday morning at 7 a.m. PST for the second of three straight eight-game round-robin match play blocks with the final block schedule for noon. At the conclusion of the final block, the top four bowlers will advance to the stepladder finals slated to begin at 3:30 p.m. PST, tomorrow.
The Senior U.S. Open winner takes home a $20,000 first prize and a berth into the 2009 PBA Tournament of Champions.

With 27 games of qualifying completed, the field for the 2008 PBA Senior U. S. Open presented by Suncoast has been narrowed to 24 players who will begin round-robin match play Thursday afternoon.
Hall of Famer Johnny Petraglia, who has led from the opening qualifying round, continues to pace the field with a 6,282 (232.6 average) 27-game total. He leads Kevin Croucher by 218 pins.
Thursday will be the toughest test for the 24 remaining players, having bowled the nine-game qualifying block this morning with another eight games of match play to go in the afternoon.
Here's what a few players had to say about the longest day of the tournament:
Johnny Petraglia – "I'm going to just try and relax and get a quick bit to eat. I struggled a little bit early today but I changed my hand position and bowled well the last three games."
Wayne Webb – "I really didn't bowl very good today and I really didn't have a very good shot. Going into match play I think what I need to do is make sure I get the right ball in my hand."
