Koreans lead top 10 men and women into Round Robin Match Play

    WG2005KOR.jpg Mixed Doubles bronze medalists Kim Soo-Kyung and Kang Hee-Won (l-r) from Korea led the top 10 men and top 10 women into the round robin match play finals on Wednesday starting at 9 a.m. The top 3 men and top 3 women after ten games will advance to the stepladder finals at 4.30 p.m. to determine the World Games champions. Both finals will be played simultaneously as the German TV has announced that the finals will be televised live.


    Kang Hee Won leads men's qualifying

     Mixed Doubles bronze medalist Kang Hee-Won from Korea won the qualifying in the men's Singles event at the 7th World Games. Kang rolled a solid 1200-score in the second block of six games and finished with 5418, 24-game total (combined Mixed Doubles and Singles), an average of 225,8. Yannaphon Larp-apharat narrowed the gap to 19 pins behind a 1369-series and finished second with 5399. Third place belonged to multiple German champion Achim Grabowski with 5273.

    Joining those three in Wednesday round robin match play are Andrew Cain (USA), Gery Verbruggen (BEL), Zulmazran Zulkifli (MAS), World Cup champion Kai Virtanen (FIN, posted the 1469 high series), Rolando A. Sebelen (DOM), Francois Sacco (FRA) and Dimitrios Karetsos (GRE).

    The top 10 men after 24 games bowl nine games of round robin match play plus position round (10 games overall) to determine the top three for the stepladder finals.

    Kim Soo-Kyung wins women's qualifying

     Kim Soo-Kyung from Korea followed in the footsteps of teammate and men's qualifying leader Kang Hee-Won and won the qualifying in the women's Singles at the 7th World Games. Kim was the only woman to crack the 5000-bar with 5074 or an average of 211,4.

    Ayano Katai from Japan ended up in second place, 104 pins behind Kim with 4970. 2001 World Games bronze medalist Piritta Kantola from Finland was third, 4944.

    Rounding out the top 10 are Shalin Zulkifli (MAS), Caroline Lagrange (CAN), Zara Glover (ENG), Tsai Hsin-Yi (TPE), Aumi Guerra (DOM), Yvette Chen (PAN) and Vanessa Fung (HKG/pictured)). Christina Fotinia from Greece, who moved from 21st place yesterday into the top 10 missed the cut by mere 1 pin due to a 145-score in the last game!
