Verbruggen, Cain, Virtanen and Kim, Lagrange, Glover to bowl for the World Games titles

    2005 World Games

     Gery Verbruggen from Belgium, Team USA's Andrew Cain and Kai Virtanen from Finland will battle it out for the men's Singles title in the 7th World Games 2005 here at Joe's SuperBowling in Mülheim on the Ruhr.

    1997 World Games Champion Verbruggen overtook the lead in the 8th game of round robin with the first 300-game in the history of the World Games. He secured the topseed for the stepladder finals with a 224-214 victory in the position round against Cain.

    23-year-old Cain of Phoenix, member of Team USA in 2002, 2003 and 2005 and the 2001 U.S. National Amateur Champion, finished second, 40 pins behind the Belgian. 2004 World Cup champion Virtanen defeated Zulmazran Zulkifli, 228-190, to overtake the Malaysian in the final game and grab the No. 3 seed.

    Virtanen meets Cain in the one-game opening match. The winner will bowl Verbruggen for the title over two games total pinfall.

    Kim Soo-Kyung, Caroline Lagrange and Zara Glover to bowl for the women's title

     

     Qualifying leader Kim Soo-Kyung from Korea, Canada's Caroline Lagrange and Zara Glover from England will bowl for the women's title in the 7th World Games 2005 here at Joe's SuperBowling in Mülheim on the Ruhr.

    Kim (pictured) took the lead in the women's division during the first match play round and never looked back. She finished won 6 of her 10 matches and averaged 227 for the round. The young Canadian defeated Hong Kong's Vanessa Fung in the position round (places 3 and 4), 246-200, to earn a berth in the stepladder finals and overtook 3-time World Champion Glover by 14 pins. Glover secured the No. 3 spot with a 205-189 victory over Kim.

    Glover meets Lagrange in the one-game opening match. The winner will bowl Kim for the title over two games total pinfall.

    Andrew Cain sets the pace in men's Round Robin

     

     Team USA's Andrew Cain set the pace in the men's round robin finals at the 7th World Games 2005 in Germany. 2001 U.S. National Amateur Champion Cain, Phoenix, averaged 230 and won all but one match en route to lead the men's division with 1190 pinfall total. Cain had games of 234, 256, 192, 259 and 209 including victories over World Games champion Kai Virtanen from Finland (259-234) and qualifying leader Kang Hee-Won (209-190).

    Trailing the American by 36 pins to sit in second place is 4-time European Ranking Champion Gery Verbruggen from Belgium with 1154 and a 3-2 won-lost record. Virtanen is third with 1110, with Mixed Doubles gold medallist Francois Sacco, France, fourth at 1088.

    The top three players after 9 games round robin and one game position round will bowl for the medals in the stepladder finals. In the one-game opening match, No. 3 seed meets No. 2 seed. The winner will bowl the No. 1 seed for the title over two games total pinfall.

    Kim Soo-Kyung in a familiar position after 5 games

     

     Qualifying leader Kim Soo-Kyung from Korea holds onto to the lead after five games round robin in the women's division of the 7th World Games in Germany. The Mixed Doubles bronze medallist felled 1082 pins, an average of 216,40, and won two of her five matches for 1102 pinfall total.

    Kim holds a 22-pin lead over 3-time World Champion Zara Glover from England, who compiled a 3-2 won-lost record and and totaled 1080 pins. Aumi Guerra (pictured) from the Dominican Republic sits in third position mere 8 pins behind Glover at 1072.

    The top three players after 9 games round robin and one game position round will bowl for the medals in the stepladder finals. In the one-game opening match, No. 3 seed meets No. 2 seed. The winner will bowl the No. 1 seed for the title over two games total pinfall.
