2005PBAS06VinceMazzanti.jpg After 30 years, Vince Mazzanti Jr. has finally followed in his father's footsteps. Mazzanti, who has dreamed of matching his father's 1968 ABC Tournament All-Events title, defeated Bob Glass, 697-627, in the finals of the 2005 ABC Senior Masters Thursday at Suncoast Bowling Center.

Mazzanti, Levittown, Pa., won all seven of his matches en route to his third career PBA Senior Tour title and his first career major. He had to defeat the reigning and three-time PBA Senior Player of the Year Glass to finally win the coveted title.

"It's a dream. I've wanted that ABC title for 30 years," said Mazzanti, who has a 4-0 career record in match play against Glass. "If you want to be the best you have to beat the best. After the second game I thought, 'this guy is not going away.' I just took it one shot at a time and tried to execute. You have to take it. He's not going to give it to you."

Mazzanti took an early lead against Glass by striking on his final six shots in game one, shooting 234 to Glass' 190. Glass came back to out-shoot Mazzanti, 224-205, in game two, but Mazzanti would not back down. After Glass chopped the 6-pin off a 6-10 spare attempt in the 5th frame of the final game, Mazzanti struck in his next six shots clinch the title, winning the final game, 258-213.

Mazzanti advanced to the title match with a 744-615 win over Ben Hoefs in the semifinals. Glass, meanwhile, advanced to the finals from the loser's bracket, also defeating Hoefs, 763-663. It was Mazzanti, who sent Glass to the loser's bracket after a 784-733 victory in winner's Round 4.

The victory gives Mazzanti a spot in next season's PBA Dexter Tournament of Champions as well as the $20,000 top prize. Glass earns $10,000 for second, while Hoefs earns $7,000 for third. Ron Degroat finished fourth for the second consecutive season and earned $5,000.

Stomach problems can't stop Glass in ABC Senior Masters match play

Sometimes 2001 ABC Senior Masters champion Bob Glass of Lawrence, Kan., does his best bowling when he's not feeling well. Suffering from an upset stomach, Glass won all three of his matches Wednesday in the ABC Senior Masters at the Suncoast Bowling Center.

The three-time PBA Senior Player of the Year, defeated Vaughn Doody (739-723), Gary Skidmore (688-588) and Rohn Morton (697-689), in three-game matches to remain in the winners' bracket of double-elimination match play.

"I'm having stomach problems and I have to watch what I eat," said the 57-year-old Glass. "I've been more lucky than good so far and it seems like I'm just feeling my way through today."

When Glass won the 2001 Senior Masters, he had to nurse a bad back throughout most of that tournament. "It seems like I just can't enjoy my success in this tournament," he added. "Hopefully I'll be feeling better tomorrow." Glass would become the third bowler to win the event twice.

"I had big leads twice and almost gave them up today. I've been luckier than I've been good," said Glass, who owns nine PBA Senior Tour title including one title season. "I'm not making good decisions. I'm hitting the pocket but not always striking. When I am striking, I'm striking a lot, but when I don't, I don't."

Glass and seven other bowlers stayed undefeated through three matches, while eight other bowlers survived through the loser's bracket.

Top Senior Masters qualifier Ross Packard of San Jose, Calif., also won his three matches to remain in the winners' bracket. "My last match today was kind of tough because I only had a two pin lead after the second game," Packard said. "Basically I haven't had to make a lot of drastic changes so everything seems to be on course so far."

Defending champion Gary Dickinson was eliminated after losing his first two matches to Roger Bowker and Frank DeRemer, respectively.

The Senior Masters match play field of 64 was cut to 16 players after Wednesday's competition. Double-elimination match play continues Thursday. The only undefeated player to come out of the winner's bracket will face the winner of the loser's bracket Thursday at 4:30 p.m. to determine the winner of the $20,000 top prize and a berth in next season's PBA Dexter Tournament of Champions.

300 games - Lee Snow, Roger Bowker, Ross Packard, Bob Priess

Ross Packard claims ABC Senior Masters top qualifier honors

Ross Packard of San Jose, Calif., averaged 242 to claim the top qualifying position Tuesday for double-elimination match play in the 13th American Bowling Congress Senior Masters, a United States Bowling Congress event, at the Suncoast Bowling Center.

The field of 384 qualifiers has been cut to the top 63 players who will join defending champion Gary Dickinson of Edmond, Okla., in match play beginning Wednesday morning at 9 a.m.

Packard bowled a 1,213 five-game total in Tuesday's final qualifying round to retain the top spot he held after Monday's second round. Bowling games of 247, 193, 245, 269 and 259 Tuesday, the 57-year-old left-hander completed qualifying with a 3,639 15-game total.

Unlike the first two rounds where he used the same ball, Packard found Tuesday's lane conditions necessitated a change in equipment. "When I shot the 193 in the second game I thought I'd better go to another ball," Packard said. "That seemed to work for me, plus I was bowling well enough where I could experiment a little to get ready for match play.

"I'm feeling pretty confident and I'm bowling well," he added. "That's the best I can hope for heading into match play." Packard is a 27-time Professional Bowlers Association regional and four-time senior regional titlist.

Bob Priess of Las Vegas earned the 63rd and final qualifying spot with a 3,287 15-game total. Match play will continue on Thursday with the championship match scheduled for 7:30 p.m. (EDT, 4:30 p.m. PDT). The ABC Senior Masters features a $180,000 prize fund with $20,000 going to the winner.

PBA Regional Tour star moves into ABC Senior Masters qualifying lead

With a 242.6 10-game average, Ross Packard of San Jose, Calif., emerged as the ABC Senior Masters, a United States Bowling Congress event, second round qualifying leader Monday at the Suncoast Bowling Center. The Masters is the second of two majors on the 2005 PBA Senior Tour schedule.

Ross is one of the most successful bowlers in the history of the PBA Regional Tour and is tied for 7th all-time with 27 PBA Regional Tour titles. Now Ross Packard is trying to become one of the stars of the PBA Senior Tour. He already owns four senior regional titles.

After posting 1,169 for his first five games Sunday, the 57-year-old left-hander bowled 1,257 Monday with games of 248, 258, 248, 278 and 225. "I seemed to carry a little better today," Packard said. "I've been able to make the right adjustments and stay with the same ball but you never know, tomorrow's another day."

"I didn't do anything different today than I did yesterday, but my carry was just very good today," said Packard, who was 25th after Sunday's first session. "Last week (in the 2005 PBA Senior Tucson Open) I shot 160 in the last game of qualifying to just miss the cut. I'm in a good spot now but I'd still like to qualify as high as I can."

He holds a 20-pin lead over second-place Junichi Yajima of Tokyo with 2,406. Yajima, the all-time leader in career Japan Professional Bowlers Association titles with 41, bowled 1,189 in Sunday's qualifying and came back with 1,217 Monday with games of 198, 258, 235, 247 and 279. "I'm surprised I bowled as well as I did," Yajima said. "I really didn't feel at my best and my timing was not there. I need to eat well and get rested for tomorrow.

"The competition is very tough here in the U.S.," he added. "I will need a lot of energy and bowl my best to do well here." Yajima has bowled in three Senior Masters with his best finish a sixth in 2002. He finished seventh in last week's PBA Senior Tour event in Tucson, Ariz. Craig Kisro, Granada Hills, Calif., is third with 2,401, while Mike Henry, Brunswick, Ohio, is fourth with 2,396. Another Japanese bowler, Takeo Sakai, Higashi, Osaka, rounds out the top five with 2,386.

The 384-bowler field will bowl its final five games on Tuesday, starting at 8 a.m. PT. The top 63 bowlers after the 15 total games of qualifying will join defending champion Gary Dickinson, Edmond, Okla., in three-game double-elimination match play starting Wednesday at 9 a.m.

The only undefeated player to come out of the winner's bracket will face the winner of the loser's bracket Thursday at 4 p.m. to determine the winner of the $20,000 top prize and a berth in next season's PBA Dexter Tournament of Champions. The ABC Senior Masters features a $180,000 total prize fund.

Amateur bowler leads ABC Senior Masters first-round qualifying

Amateur bowler Frank DeRemer of Lacey, Wash., averaged 262.2 to lead first-round qualifying Sunday in the 13th American Bowling Congress Senior Masters, a United States Bowling Congress event, at the Suncoast Bowling Center.

The 50-year-old postmaster fired a 1,311 five-game total with games of 279, 278, 268, 239 and 247 to hold a 24-pin lead over PBA national tour and senior tour titlist Bob Handley of Winter Park, Fla.

"I was dialed in right from the start," DeRemer said. "I didn't have to make too many adjustments all day."

In his first year of eligibility, DeRemer looked forward to competing in the Senior Masters against bowling's top senior players. "I wasn't really excited about turning 50 but I did want to test the waters by bowling against the great senior players," he added.

DeRemer has one PBA regional title and a few amateur titles to his credit. He finished 30th in the PBA Senior U.S. Open in May. He also owns five ABC World Team Challenge regional titles and finished third in the Grand Championship in 1994.

Teata Semiz, N. Brunswick, N.J.; Dennis Psaropoulos, Lake Worth, Fla. and Larry Franz, Redford, Mich., rolled 300 games in qualifying.

Qualifying continues Monday and Tuesday with the top 63 players joining defending champion Gary Dickinson of Edmond, Okla., in double-elimination match play beginning Wednesday. Match play continues on Thursday with the championship match scheduled for 7:30 p.m. (EDT, 4:30 p.m. PDT).

A field of 385 bowlers ages 50 years and older are competing for a $180,000 prize fund which will pay $20,000 to the winner.
