Jacque Cantrall of Lexington, Neb., threw the final ball in the 85th annual WIBC Championship Tournament that concluded Tuesday afternoon, July 6th, after a 71-day run in first-time host city Wichita. The event's 42,298 participants competed for a prize fund of approximately $1.7 million, the highest outside Reno, Nev.

All eyes are on Jacque Cantrall, fellow bowler Kim McMahon yelled as Cantrall stepped up to finish her 124 singles game. "WIBC's slowest bowler." Cantrall then faced television cameras and a newspaper photographer who were there to record the tournament's conclusion.

Well, so much for slipping in and slipping out unnoticed, said Cantrall, who admitted to not calling her brother who lives in nearby Conway Springs, Kan. "I wasn't going to be in Wichita long, so I didn't call him. I'm going to be in trouble if he sees the news."

The WIBC Tournament features five divisions: Classic for teams with averages of 946 and above; Division 1 for averages of 846-945; Division 2 for averages of 746-845; Division 3 for averages of 651-745; and a trial Division 4 for averages of 650 and below.

On May 13, the High Roller-Cherry Hill, N.J., team shot 1,247 in a single game to set the all-time tournament record for highest game. The team broke its own record of 1,208 set at the 2002 national event. The team's series of 3,320 was the second highest in tournament history -- between the 3,327 they bowled in 2002 and the 3,234 they shot in 2000. Team members were Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nev.; Jill Albrecht, Burlington, Wis.; Gina Daroszewski, Milwaukee; Carol Gianotti, Henderson; and Marliss Tapp, Portage, Mich.

Texas duo Carolyn Dorin-Ballard and Lynda Barnes totaled 1,498 on May 13 in doubles with games of 517, 459 and 522. That total was two pins better than the record set the previous year by Karen Collura, Toronto, and Connie Ward, Hamilton, Ontario.

Sharon Smith of Bowling Green, Ky., held onto the singles title with 754, edging out Kim Adler of Merritt Island, Fla., who shot 753. Adler went on to win the all-events title with scores of 606 in team, 774 in doubles and the singles set to give her a total of 2,133. That total ranks third in the tournament record books for nine-game series.

The WIBC Championship Tournament attracted bowlers from every U.S. state and Canada, as well as international participants from Australia, Bermuda, England and Japan. The tournament is the largest participatory sporting event in the world for women with an estimated economic impact of more than $40 million, based on previous WIBC events with similar participation levels.

Upcoming WIBC championship tournament locations include Tulsa, Okla. (2005); Reno, Nev., (2006 and 2009); Charlotte, N.C. (2007); and Detroit, Mich. (2008).
