Minnesota team sets the bar at USBC Women's Championships

For many of the teams competing at the 2009 United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships, there is no better feeling than finding themselves at the top of the leaderboard. As it turns out, being surprised with this information is exciting as well. Just ask the members of Ten Pins of Anoka, Minn.

On Friday afternoon, Ten Pins posted games of 623, 739, and 662 for a 2,024 series and took the lead in Division 4 (team averages of 650 and below). Although they found themselves in the driver's seat, they were unaware of their accomplishment until surrounding teams at the National Bowling Stadium started looking for them.

"We were taking our bags to the lockers and had no idea we were in first," Norah Wyman said. "When we got back, a few of the other teams let us know."

Although they consider the USBC Women's Championships a time to get away and have fun with friends, the women of Ten Pins will be keeping close tabs on whether or not their score holds up. Last year, it would've been good enough for a spot in the top 10.

"I'll be looking every day, but for now, I can't wait to get back home, print out our score and show everyone in our league," Wyman said.

Maggi Runke led the way for Ten Pins with a 507 series and was followed by Debbie Calenbaugh (428), Wyman (407), Nancy Caine (371) and Cheri Runke (311).

Maggi Runke and her daughter Cheri also found their way into the Division 4 doubles lead (combined averages of 260 or lower) with an 866 total. Maggi led the pair with a 491 series, while Cheri contributed 375.

The 2009 Women's Championships will feature 8,330 teams in five average-based divisions. Competition began on March 28 and will continue until July 5.

Presenting sponsors for the 2009 USBC Women's Championships are Eldorado Hotel Casino, Silver Legacy Resort Casino and Circus Circus Reno. Other participating sponsors are Kegel, official lane maintenance provider, Atlantis Hotel and Casino, Sands Regency Casino Hotel, Harrah's Hotel and Casino, Club Cal Neva, and Storm Products Inc.
