Wichita State University's Daniela Alvarado (pictured left) tallied 2,524 pins over the course of 12 games to grab the lead in the women's division after Monday's opening day of action at the 2009 United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Singles Championships at AMF Euless Lanes in Euless, Texas. Joshua McBride (right), also of Wichita State, fired a 12-game total of 2,421 pins to lead the men's division.

Alvarado's 210.33 per-game average was nearly five pins better than that of any other competitor, man or woman. She broke 200 in ten of her 12 qualifying games and remained steady throughout, carding a high game of 247 and a low game of 196.

For her efforts, Alvarado received the 2009 Glenn Carlson Award - given to the high qualifier in each division - and a bye into Tuesday's quarterfinal round, where she is guaranteed to face no higher than the eighth seed.

Alvarado was pleased by her opening-day success, which she credits to staying focused on one moment at a time rather than on the larger picture of the tournament as a whole; nevertheless, she believes there are both advantages and disadvantages to being the women's top seed.

"I'm happy that I don't have to wake up early to bowl in the first two rounds, but, being the leader, it's going to be tough on me when I do get out there," Alvarado said. "The bowlers I'm going to face will have had more time to get comfortable with the lanes, so I'll have to stay really focused and on top of the transitions. Again, I'm going to have to take it one shot at a time."

The need to remain grounded in the present also was echoed by McBride, who used that same mentality to shoot 1,263 during his second six-game block, vaulting him from sixth place all the way to first.

"After the first squad, I was tense, but I stayed aware of making good shots, and I didn't let the difficult pattern get to me," McBride said. "Now, I just need to stay here and in the moment. I'll enjoy where I'm at because it's huge to get those first two byes, but I just need to keep my mind focused on one ball to the next."

All 16 players in each division return Tuesday for single-elimination, best-of-five match play. Seeds nine through 16 take to the lanes at 7:40 a.m. Winners will advance to take on bowlers seeded fifth through eighth at 9:25 a.m. The quarterfinal round, which begins at 12:10 p.m., will pit second-round winners against the top four seeds from Monday's qualifying round. Matches will continue until champions are crowned in both divisions.
