Team USA's Stefanie Nation sets the pace in Singles event

    Nation, 25, led the first of three squads in the Singles preliminaries with 1361 six-game total and an average of 226.83. She had games of 228, 257, 205, 242, 206 and 223 and outaveraged her nearest competitor, Helen Johnsson (right), Sweden, by more than 10 pins.

    Johnson finished her set with back-to-back 240s to help grab the second place with 1299 (216.50). Shalin Zulkifli, Malaysia, who turned professional to bowl on the PBA Women Series last season, closed her set with 265 and 238 to land in third place with 1297 (216.17).

She ended with a 199 game and overtook the second Team USA member in the squad, Carolyn Dorin-Ballard (right), by five pins.

    The 20-time PWBA champion moved into second place after 5 games but slipped all the way out of the top 4 after a final 182 game with 1276 (212.67). For Dorin-Ballard and the rest of the 79 women from Squad 1, the Singles event is over.

    The 228 women from 45 WTBA member federations were split into three squads to bowl six games on the Stockholm pattern, the shorter pattern of the two chosen by Technical delegate Daniel Falconi from Mexico.

    All players will bowl one six-game block. The top 4 players at the end of the day will advance to the finals on Thursday, July 30, 2009 starting at 5.30pm. The No. 1 seed will bowl the No. 4 and No. 2 takes on No. 3 in the semifinals. The winners will bowl for the title and the losers will share the bronze medal. All matches are one-game matches.

    The 2009 Women's World Championships consists of six disciplines. Players will compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in Singles, Doubles, Trios, Team and Masters competition before the event concludes Sunday. Medals also will be awarded for All Events.

    The World Championships is being held on 60 specially constructed lanes inside Cashman Center and includes the world's largest mobile video scoreboard, an investment of nearly $6 million, spectator seating, office, vendor and pro shop space, a scale room, squad room, registration area and shipping department.

    USBC plans to live stream portions of the event on bowl.com, and bowling fans around the world will be able to watch the finals and select semifinals.
