Korea takes the lead in the Doubles preliminaries after Squad 1 of 3

    Colombia's Maria Jose Rodriguez rolls the first 300 of the Championships

    2009HwangSunOkGangHyeEun.jpgGang Hye Eun and Hwang Sun Ok (r-l) from Korea overtook the lead after the first of three squads in the Doubles preliminaries of the 2009 Women's World Championships in Las Vegas.

    The duo rolled six games between 408 and 490 to finish the six-game block on the WTBA Athens oil pattern - a medium pattern but the longer one of the two that will be used during this championships - with 2613 pinfall total and an average of 217.75. Hwang led the way with 1313 and Gang contributed 1300.

    2009WWCAnneGalesRikkeRasmussen.jpgThe Koreans survived a late challenge by Anne Gales and Rikke Rasmussen (l-r), who landed in second place with 2608 (217.33). The Danes finished with a huge 482 game (to 419 from the Koreans) but came up five pins short of the lead. Rasmussen posted the highest individual series of the squad with 1357 and Gales added 1251.

    2009WWCHayleyWhiteJoCundy.jpgJo Cundy and Hayley White (r-l) from England took the early lead in the 37-doubles field after posting a 524 (Cundy 258/White 266) in game #2, a tie for the third-highest game in doubles in the history of the World Championships. The duo checked in third place with 2548 (212.33).

    Rounding out the top 4, who still have a chance to bowl in the finals tomorrow evening at 7pm, was Indonesia. Putty Armein and Shalima Zalsha combined for 2533 (211.08). Armein had 1317 and Zalsha 1216.

    2009WWCNinaFlackHelenJohnson.jpgThe Indonesian beat out defending Trios champions Nina Flack and Helen Johnson (l-r) for the fourth place by 20 pins. The Swedes finished fourth with 2513 despite Johnson's 726 series including back to back 260s at the end of the set.

    2009WWCJoseMariaRodriguez.jpgMaria Jose Rodriguez (pictured left) of Colombia set the first highlight in the championships when she rolled the first 300 game of the championships and the fourth overall. Cha Mi-Jung from Korea rolled the first perfecto by a woman in World Championships in 1999 in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Her compatriot Kim Yeau-Yin and Kirsten Penny England (both are here in Las Vegas) rolled No. 2 and No. 3 in 2007 in Monterrey, Mexico.

    Rodrigues and team mate Alejandra Mora finished the squad in 14th place with 2377 (198.08). The duo from the United States, Liz Johnson and Singles top seed Stefanie Nation, landed in 8th place with 2456 (204.67).

    The 2009 Women's World Championships Doubles event started this morning at the Cashman Center in Las Vegas with the first of three squads. All teams bowl six games on the medium pattern (WTBA Athens). The top 4 players at the end of the day will advance to the finals on Thursday starting at 7pm immediately following the Singles finals.

    The No. 1 seed after the preliminaries will bowl the No. 4 and No. 2 takes on No. 3 in the semifinals. The winners will bowl for the title and the losers will share the bronze medal. All matches are one-game matches.

    The 2009 Women's World Championships consists of six disciplines. Players will compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in Singles, Doubles, Trios, Team and Masters competition before the event concludes Sunday. Medals also will be awarded for All Events.

    The World Championships is being held on 60 specially constructed lanes inside Cashman Center and includes the world's largest mobile video scoreboard, an investment of nearly $6 million, spectator seating, office, vendor and pro shop space, a scale room, squad room, registration area and shipping department.

    USBC plans to live stream portions of the event on bowl.com, and bowling fans around the world will be able to watch the finals and select semifinals.
