Karen Marcano starts PABCON Championships with victory in Singles

    2009WUSOKarenMarcano.jpg2009WUSODiandraAsbaty.jpgVenezuela's Karen Marcano (pictured left) started the women's Singles competition at the 2009 Pan American Bowling Confederation Championships with a 278 game en route to win gold medal Tuesday at Carolina Bowling Center in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

    Marcano added games of 236 and 242 to the 278, the highest game in the women's division to date, for a 756 series but fell behind Team USA's Diandra Asbaty (right) after a 187 in game #4. Marcano regained the lead with a 227 and secured the title with a 194 and a 1364 six-game total, an average of 227.33.

    Asbaty started with 245, 238, 237 and 232 but had to settle for the silver medal after finishing with 206 and 197 for 1355 total. Panama's Tilcia Lancini emerged as the surprise bronze medalist with 1323. Lancini had two 258 games in the first three and maintained her medal spot until the end of the day.

    Places 4-6 belonged to Team USA members. Kim Terrell-Kearney was fourth, 10 pins back of the bronze medal, with 1313. Shannon O'Keefe finished fifth with 1305, while Lynda Barnes was sixth with 1300. Karen's sister Alicia Marcano was close behind in 7th place with 1296. 8th place belonged to Julie Johnson-Loyer, Canada, with 1291. Rounding out the top 10 were Colombians Rocio Restrepo (1289) and Luz Adriana Leal (1287).

    Two-time World Champion Clara Juliana Guerrero, Colombia, was 13th with 1267. Shannon Pluhowsky ended up 12th with 1271, while Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, both USA, landed in 16th place with 1257.

    Competition continues Wednesday with the Doubles event. Medals will be also awarded for Trios, Team, All Events and Masters, which consists of the top 16 men and top 16 women from the All Events standings.
