Korean women start 5th East Asian Games with Gold and Silver in Women's Singles

    2009EAGLogo_small.jpg2009EAGHwangSunOk.jpgThe bowling competition of the 5th East Asian Games in Hong Kong, China got underway on Monday morning with the Women's Singles. 36 women from six countries, China, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea and Macau took to the lanes at Hong Kong Bowling City, a state-of-the-art 44-laner located in two convention halls.

    The Korean women underlined their status as tournament favorites when Hwang Sun-Ok (pictured right) and Shin Bo-Hyun earned the gold and silver medal. Two-time World Champion Hwang, who also won the Singles title of the 2008 Hong Kong Asian Championships in this bowling center, had a slow start into the event with games of 193 and 215 but moved into third place after three games with a huge 266 game only trailing to team mate Gye Min-Young (716) and Japan's Haruka Matsuda (705).

    Misaki Mukotani, Japan was fourth with 671 with Shin in fifth place at 666. While Gye struggled in the second 3-game block and Matsuda couldn't match her pace from the first block, Hwang added games of 247, 258 and 226 for the highest 3-game block of 731 en route to claim the gold medal with 1405 pinfall total or an average of 234.17.

    2009EAGMasakiMukotaniHwangSunOkShinBoHyun.jpgShin posted back-to-back 256 games and finished with 214 (726) to help grab the silver medal with 1392 (232.00). Mukotani rebounded from a sub-par 192 game with 247 and 257 to beat out Matsuda for the bronze medal by 5 pins, 1367 to 1362.

    The top 4 Korean and Japanese bowlers shared the first eight places in Women's singles. Chien Hsiu-Lan of Chinese Taipei was 9th with 1250, while Milki Ng was the best bowler of the host country of Hong Kong in 10th place with 1241.

    Maximum six players per team will compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in six disciplines: Singles, Doubles, Trios, 5-player Team, All Events and Masters.
