Japanese women, Korean men lead as Team event has reached the halfway mark

    2009EAGLogo_small.jpg 2009EAGJapanWomen.jpgThe Japanese women and the Korean men, not the Korean women and the Japanese men as expected, took the lead in the five-player team event after the first block on long oil in the 5th East Asian Games Wednesday afternoon at Hong Kong Bowling City in Hong Kong, China.

    Haruka Matsuda, Misaki Mukotani, Nao Ohishi, Maki Nakano and Ayano Katai (pictured right with Kanako Ishimine) rolled games of 1143, 1089 and 970 to lead the women's division with 3202 pinfall total and an average of 213.47.

    The favorites from Korea, who have won gold and silver in Singles, swept all medals in Doubles and took the two top spots in trios earlier today, sit in second place with 3129 (208.60), as two of the five players, Jeon Eun-Hee (587) and Shin Bo-Hyun (529), had sub-par series.

    Third place belongs to Chinese Taipei with 3079 (205.27) with Macau in fourth (2969, 197.93) and the players from the host country Hong Kong in fifth (2965, 197.67).

    2009EAGKoreaMen.jpgOn the men's side Hong Hae-Sol, Choi Ki-Bong, Jang Dong-Chul, Kim Jae-Hoon and Kim Tae-Young (pictured left with Suh Sang-Cheon) got off to a great start with three consecutive games over 1100, The Koreans had 1155, 1179 and 1136 to take the lead at halftime with 3470 and an average of 231.33. Kim Jae-Hoon (290) and Hong Hae-Sol (279) posted the highest games in the 1179 effort.

    The Japanese bowlers, who have won the titles in Singles and Doubles, sit in second place with 3295 (219.67), 175 pins off the pace for the gold medal. Hong Kong is just two pins behind in third place with 3293 (219.53).

    With the second block on short oil to go, Chinese Taipei is fourth with 3204 (213.60), followed by Guam in fifth with 3149 (209.93) and Macau in sixth with 3057 (203.80).

    The second 3-game block on Thursday afternoon will determine the winners and also the medalists in All Events as well as the top 16 who will advance to the Masters finals on Friday and Saturday.

    The bowling competition in the 5th East Asian Games drew 32 women and 43 men from eight countries, China, Chinese Taipei, Guam, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Macau and Mongolia, who will compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in six disciplines: Singles, Doubles, Trios, 5-player Team, All Events and Masters.
