Korea wins gold and silver in men's and women's Trios at East Asian Games

    Japan takes the bronze medals in both divisions

    2009EAGLogo_small.jpg 2009EAGWomenTriosGoldJeonEunHeeHwangSunOkSonYunHee.jpgThe Korean women won its third gold medal of the 5th East Asian Games in Hong Kong, while the men finally captured the first title in the Trios event Thursday morning at Hong Kong Bowling City. The other Korean trios claimed the silver medals. Both bronze medals went to Japan.

    In the women's division, Jeon Eun-Hee, Hwang Sun-Ok and Son Yun-Hee (pictured right, l-r) posted the field-best 2125 3-game series (236.11) on the long oil pattern to move from second to first place with 4044 pinfall total and an average of 224.67.

    Jeon led the team with 1357, Hwang added 1345 and Son had 1342 including the highest game (278) and the highest 3-game series (733).

    2009EAGGyeMinYoungShinBoHyunGangHyeEun.jpgShort oil leader Gye Min-Young, Shin Bo-Hyun and Gang Hye-Eun (pictured left, l-r) fell one spot despite averaging 222.55 on the long pattern to finish in second place with 3970 (220.56). Gye recorded the highest individual six-game series with 1398 (233.00)

    Japan's Haruka Matsuda, Nao Ohishi and Ayano Katai were a distant third with 3797 (210.94).

    The Korean men, who lost the gold medals in Singles and Doubles to Japanese bowlers in the final game of each event, rolled the two highest blocks on the long pattern to sweep the gold and silver medals.

    2009EAGMenTriosGoldKimTaeYoungHongHaeSolKimJeaHoon.jpgShort-oil leaders Kim Tae-Young, Hong Hae-Sol and Kim Jae-Hoon (pictured right, l-r) added the second-best 2118 series to the 2021 from Wednesday to win the gold medal with 4139 and an average of 229.94. Hong led the team and the event with 1435 (239.17) and was followed by Jea-Hoon (1360) and Tae-Young (1344).

    Choi Ki-Bong, Suh Sang-Cheon and Jang Dong-Chul narrowed the gap with 2137 including the high game of 760 but fell 30 pins short to earn silver with 4109 (228.28). Choi led the team with 1376, Suh had 1369 and Jang had 1364.

    Japan with Doubles champion Tomoyuki Sasaki, Singles champion Toshihiko Takahashi and veteran Masaaki Takemoto fell one spot to third place with 4041 behind a 2061 series on long.

    The second 3-game block of the Team event on Thursday afternoon will determine the winners of the fourth discipline and also the medalists in All Events as well as the top 16 who will advance to the Masters finals on Friday and Saturday.

    The bowling competition in the 5th East Asian Games drew 32 women and 43 men from eight countries, China, Chinese Taipei, Guam, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Macau and Mongolia, who will compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in six disciplines: Singles, Doubles, Trios, 5-player Team, All Events and Masters.
