Korean men and women claim gold medals in Team and All Events at 5th East Asian Games

    2009EAGLogo_small.jpg 2009EAGTeamKorea.jpgAfter winning gold and silver in Trios earlier this day, the Korean women and men (pictured right) claimed another gold medal in the five-player team event in the 5th East Asian Games at Hong Kong Bowling City in Hong Kong, China.

    In addition, the Korean women swept all the medals in All Events, while the Korean men took gold and silver.

    2009EAGWomenTeamGoldKorea.jpgStarting the second block on short oil in second place, Hwang Sun-Ok, Jeon Eun-Hee, Shin Bo-Hyun, Gang Hye-Eun, Gye Min-Youngand Son Yun-Hee (pictured left) put together three consistent games of 1044, 1060 and 1056 to easily win the gold medal in the women's team event with 6289 pinfall total and an average of 209.63.

    2009EAGGyeMinYoung.jpgGye Min-Young's (right) 1266 was enough to secure the gold medal in All Events (combined results of Singles, Doubles, Trios and Team event) with 5354 pinfall total and an average of 223.08 over 24 games. Son Yun-Hee used the highest series in the Team event (1333) to help grab the silver medal with 5324 (221.83). Singles champion Hwang Sun-Ok took the bronze with 5287 (220.29). Japan's Nao Ohishi was the best non-Korean bowler in fourth place with 5146 (214.42).

    Ohishi and her team mates Haruka Matsuda, Misaki Mukotani, Maki Nakano and Ayano Katai started the day in first place behind a 3202 set on the long pattern yesterday. The Japanese managed games between 919 and 977 only and had to settle for third place with 6057 (201.90).

    World Trios champions Yang Hao-Ting and Tsai Hsin-Yi, from Chinese Taipei and their team mates Chien Hsiu-Lan, Pan Yu-Fen and Wang Ya-Ting leaped one spot behind a 2990 series on short oil to earn the silver medal with 6069 (202.30).

    The team from the host country, Hong Kong, with Milki Ng, Sarah Cheng, Sylvia Kong, Chan Shuk Han and Vanessa Fung was a distant fourth with 5792 (193.07). Macau with Chan Weng Sam, Hui Tong, Lam Sou Keng, Julia, Un Im Cheng, and Choi Kit Fan, Filomenafinished in fifth place with 5709 (190.30).

    2009EAGMenTeamGoldKorea.jpgThe Korean men (pictured left) Choi Ki-Bong, Jang Dong-Chul, Suh Sang-Cheon, Hong Hae-Sol, Kim Jae-Hoon and Kim Tae-Young led their nearest competitor by more than 350 pins or almost 12 pins per game en route to cruise to the title with 6716 pinfall total and an average of 223.87.

    The Koreans, who led the event after the first block on long oil with 3470 added games of 1032, 1175 and 1039 for 3246 on the short pattern. Kim Jae-Hoon led the team with a huge 1432 series, which also propelled him into second place in All Events with 5432 (226.33).

    2009EAGHongHaeSol.jpgHis team mate Hong Hae-Sol (pictured right) captured the coveted gold medal with 5499 pins and an average of 229.13 for 24 games. Tomoyuki Sasaki took the bronze with 5407 (225.29).

    Hong Kong's new wonder kid, 16-year-old Michael Mak led his team mates Eric Tseng, Wicky Yeung, Cyrus Cheung, Rickle Kam and Wu Siu Hong to the silver medal in the Team event with 6361 (212.03). Mak had had games of 248, 265 and 258 (771) on long oil and added 258, 241 and 197 on short for 1467, the highest six-game series of the 5th East Asian Games.

    The feat came at the expense of Japan's Tomoyuki Sasaki, Nobuhito Fujii, Toshihiko Takahashi, Shota Kawazoe, Masaaki Takemoto and Tomokatsu Yamashita, who fell from second to third with 6282 (209.40).

    Macau with Choi Io Fai, Leong Kin Keong, Lok Hei Ieong, Van Ka Kei, Lee Tak Man and Jose Manuel Machon was a distant fourth with 6099 (203.30).

    Chinese Taipei featuring Cheng Hsing-Chao, Hung Kun-Yi, Tsai Ting-Yun, Yang Nien-Hua, Fang Chih-Nan and Cheng Chao-Yu landed in fifth place with 6050 (201.67) and Guam's Joseph Guerrero, Frank Russo, Brian Manibusan, Keith Guerrero and Joey Miranda III finished sixth with 5948 (198.27).

    The bowling competition in the 5th East Asian Games drew 32 women and 43 men from eight countries, China, Chinese Taipei, Guam, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Macau and Mongolia, who compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in six disciplines: Singles, Doubles, Trios, 5-player Team, All Events and Masters.

    The top 16 men and the top 16 women advanced to the Masters finals on Friday and Saturday. All players will bowl 15 games round robin match play plus one game position round with the top 3 players in each division advancing to the stepladder finals.
