Hwang Sun-Ok, Kim Jea-Hoon lead in Masters at 5th East Asian Games

    Koreans on target for clean sweep in men's and women's Masters

    2009EAGKimJeaHoonHwangSunOk.jpgThe Korean bowlers are on target for another clean sweep in the men's and women's Masters of the 5th East Asian Games, whose bowling competition concludes on Saturday at Hong Kong Bowling City in Hong Kong, China.

    The Korean women, who have won all but one medal (bronze in Singles) they could win in the five disciplines, Singles. Doubles, Trios, Team and All Events, hold the top three places and five out of the top 7 after the first eight games of round robin match play (10 pins bonus per win).

    Singles champion Hwang Sun-Ok (pictured left with men's leader Kim Jea-Hoon) is on the way to her fourth gold medal as she led the 16-player women's field with 1942 pinfall total including 60 pins bonus. The two-time World Champion had the field-best 235.25 average and won six of her eight matches.

    2009EAGGyeMinYoungHwangSunOkSonYunHee.jpgAll Events champion Gye Min-Young (left), who also targets to win her fourth gold medal of the Games, is already 105 pins off the pace for the top seed in the 3-player stepladder finals on Saturday. Gye sits in second place with 1837 and an average of 233.38 including a 5-3 match play record.

    Third place belongs to Son Yun-Hee (right), who checked in with 1817 including the field-best 7-1 won-loss record. The two-time gold medalist (Trios and Team) and runner-up in All Events has a 46-pin buffer over Misaki Mukotani from Japan who sits in fourth place with 1771 (6-2).

    Gang Hye-Eun, Korea, led after the first four games including a 290, the highest women's game of the entire Games thus far, but slipped to fifth place with 1761 as she lost four of her last five matches including three sub-par games.

    On the men's side, Kim Jea-Hoon took a 117-pin lead after the first eight matches averaging 233.38 for 1917 pinfall total including 50 pins bonus. Kim, a two time gold medalist and runner-up in All Events, had the highest game of the men's division today with 289.

Kim Tae-Young (right), who won gold in Trios with Jea-Hoon and Hae-Sol, is third with 1741 (5-3).

    Hong Kong's Wu Siu Hong, silver medalist in Singles, is 58 pins off the pace for the top 3 in fourth place with 1733 including a 4--3-1 W-L-T record. Yang Nien-Hua, Chinese Taipei, is just two pins behind Wu with 1731 (3-5) with Hong Kong's rising star Michael Mak, who is tied for sixth place at 1724 with Suh Sang-Cheon, Korea. The fifth Korean, Choi Ki-Bong is in 8th place with 1715.

    The bowling competition in the 5th East Asian Games drew 32 women and 43 men from eight countries, China, Chinese Taipei, Guam, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Macau and Mongolia, who compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in six disciplines: Singles, Doubles, Trios, 5-player Team, All Events and Masters.

    The top 16 men and the top 16 women from All Events advanced to the Masters finals on Friday and Saturday. All players will bowl 15 games round robin match play plus one game position round with the top 3 players in each division advancing to the stepladder finals.
