2009EAGMastersGyeMinYoungHongHaeSol.jpgIn a unique outcome the top 3 women and the top 3 men in the All Events standings at the 5th East Asian Games bowling competition also earned the medals in the Masters ´finals Saturday at Hong Kong Bowling City in Hong Kong, China.

All Events champions Gye Min-Young and Hong Hae-Sol (pictured) earned the coveted titles and their fourth gold medal of the Games. Gye and Hong averaged 243,63 and 250.50, respectively, in the second block but both grabbed the No. 1 seed for the three-player stepladder finals in the position round match following 15 games of round robin match play.

The women's final was an all-Korean affair with All Events bronze and silver medalists Hwang Sun-Ok and Son Yun-Hee facing off. Hwang, a two-time World Champion and silver medalist in Masters at the 2009 Women's World Championships in Las Vegas, ousted her compatriot in a low-scoring match, 204-186, for the right to bowl Gye for the title.

2009EAGWMGyeMinYoung.jpgGye (picture right), who won all her eight matches in the second block including a 261-240 victory over Hwang in the position round to earn the top seed by 20 pins, took a 33 pins lead after the first game of the title match over two games total pinfall, 227-194. Gye cruised to the title by rolling another 260 game against Hwang's 217 for a 487-411 win.

The Korean women's team underlined their status as the world best women's team in tenpin bowling winning all but one medal possible: Gold and silver in Singles (Misaki Mukotani, Japan, took the bronze), gold, silver and bronze in Doubles, gold and silver in trios, gold in Team and a clean sweep in All Events and Masters.

Men's All Events champion Hong Hae-Sol had to sit and watch the opening shootout match with All Events runner-up Kim Jea-Hoon, Korea, and bronze medalist Tomoyuki Sasaki, Japan, facing off.

Sasaki, who beat out Koreans Kim Tae-Young (4th) and Suh Sang-Cheon (5th) for the No. 3 seed, was chanceless against Kim, who flew past his opponent, 236-165, to advance to the title match over two games total pinfall.

2009EAGMMHongHaeSol.jpgHong (pictured left), who defeated Kim 213-208 and received 10 pins bonus for the win to beat out his compatriot for the top spot by three pins, took a 23 pin lead after the first game, winning 246-223. He sealed the victory with a 194-166 in game #2 to earn his fourth gold medal after Trios, Team and All Events with 440-389.

The Korean men captured four gold, three silver and one bronze medal. The gold medals in Singles (Toshihiko Takahashi) and Doubles (Sasaki and Nobuhito Fujii) went to Japan.

The bowling competition in the 5th East Asian Games drew 32 women and 43 men from eight countries, China, Chinese Taipei, Guam, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Macau and Mongolia, who competed for gold, silver and bronze medals in six disciplines: Singles, Doubles, Trios, 5-player Team, All Events and Masters.
