Bröndsted and Palermaa overtake the lead in European rankings
03/20/06
Britt Bröndsted of Denmark and Osku Palermaa of Finland overtook the lead in the women's and men's European rankings after the sixth of twenty events of the 2006 European Bowling Tour, the Brunswick Euro Challenge in Greece.
Two-time defending ranking champion Bröndsted won the women's rankings at the BEC finishing in sixth place overall and earned 100 ranking points. With total 220 points the Dane overtook Zara Glover from England, who slipped to second place with 201 points. The former 3-time World champion is the sole player - men and women - who has cashed ranking points in all six ranking tournaments thus far.
Isabelle Saldjian (left), France, and Nina Flack (right), Sweden, remained in third and fourth place with 156 and 152 points, respectively. Reija Lunden leaped three spots into fifth place with 134 points. The Finnish women have six bowlers among the top 25 despite playing the EBT 'Majors' only.
Rounding out the top 8 are Patricia Schwarz, Germany (124), former Team USA member Melissa Bellinder, USA (120 out of the last two tournaments) and Martina Beckel, Germany (114).
Last year's runner-up in the men's ranking Palermaa used his third second-place finish this season to position himself atop the men's leaderboard. Palermaa has accumulated 214 points. Second place belongs to BEC champion Jason Belmonte (left), Australia. Belmonte, who had 70 points from finishing third in the season opening event, the Ballmaster Open, got another 100 points for his victory in Greece to trail Palermaa by 44 pints with 170 point total.
Virtanen (left) fell to third place with 149 points. Two-time defending ranking champion Paul Moor (right) is fourth with 139 points, with Nickolay Ovchinnikovs, Latvia, fifth at 113 and Catalonia Open champion Federico Rossi, Italy, and Kimmo Lehtonen, Finland, tied for sixth place at 108. Eighth place belongs to Stuart Williams, England, 102.
The top 8 men and top 8 women in the rankings at the end of the season qualify for the 2007 World ranking Masters to be held in Doha, Qatar.
The European Bowling Tour will take a three-week break before heading to Jönköping in Sweden for the Husqvarna International by Ebonite at Bowling Arena, April 10-16, 2006. The tournament is the seventh stop of the 2006 Tour.
