Winnipeg's Michael Schmidt successfully defended his Canadian World Cup tenpin bowling title, yesterday at the Bowling World Cup Canadian National Championships in Caraquet, N.B. With the win, the Chateau Lanes bowler advances to the QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup, later this year in Caracas, Venezuela.

Last November in Ljubljana, Slovenia, Schmidt became only the third Canadian male and seventh Canadian to claim the world title at the Bowling World Cup (archive picture).

Schmidt finished second in the men's division to advance to the step ladder semifinals where he beat Calgary's Corey Clayton 222-201. In the final, Schmidt needed to beat top-seed Brent Pinnell of Duncan, B.C., twice and he cruised to 225-193 and 216-177 victories.
