Luz Adriana Leal, Dominic Barrett win Thursday squads in Barcelona

    Squad leaders advance to the finals of the Catalonia Open

    2010EBT04LuzAdrianaLeal.jpg2009EBT04NicoleSanders.jpgLuz Adriana Leal (pictured left) led the third qualifying squad of the VIII Catalonia Open - Trofeu Galasa Thursday afternoon at Bowling Pedralbes in Barcelona with 1366 and is automatically qualified for the finals on Sunday.

    The long-time Colombian national team member had games of 221, 215, 203, 246, 235 and 198 for 1318 pinfall total, an average of 219.67, and added 48 pins handicap en route to overtake the lead in the overall qualifying standings.

    Squad 2 leader Yoan Alix, France, slipped to second place with 1349 but is also seeded into the finals.

    Nicole Sanders (right) was 42 pins behind Leal to move into third place with 1324. The Dutch national team member had a very slow start into squad 3 with 170 and 146 but rebounded with 258 and 278 before she closed out with 201 and 223. Marcial Ovide, Catalonia, was close behind with 1311, good enough for fourth place overall.

    2010EBT04DominicBarrett.jpg2010EBT02MikStampe.jpgDominic Barrett (left), England, one of the hottest players on the 2010 European Bowling Tour, earned his berth into the finals by winning squad 4 on Thursday night. Barrett, who finished second in the Hammer Bronzen Schietspoel and has won the Wroclaw Open by Hammer last weekend, felled 1307 pins to move into fifth place.

    Dane Mik Stampe (right) finished his series with a big 289, the highest game of the tournament so far, but fell one pin short of the squad lead with 1306.

    The VIII Catalonia Open - Trofeu Galasa will be held from Feb., 23-28, 2010 at Bowling Pedralbes in Barcelona, Spain, and offers total prize fund of 44.700 Euro. The tournament is the fourth stop of the 2010 European Bowling Tour and one of the Tour's "Silver" tournaments.

    The 2010 EBT Tour features 2 EBT Platinum tournament (formerly Premier), 7 EBT Gold tournaments (formerly Major), 8 EBT Silver tournaments (formerly Challenger) and 4 EBT Satellite tournaments (new category).

    Qualifying runs through Saturday evening, Feb. 27, with the final Squad 12 scheduled for 9 p.m. local time.

    A total of 48 players, the top 42 qualifiers including all squad leaders plus the next six women will advance to the finals and carry forward 50 per cent of their respective qualifying total into Round 1.

    Those 48 players will bowl 4 games to cut to the top 24 with the pinfall total being carried forward. Those 24 will determine the top three players for the stepladder finals in another 4-game block. In the semifinal, the No. 3 seed takes on No. 2 for the right to bowl the top seeded player for the title and the 6.000 Euro top prize.
