Part-time Professional Bowlers Association Senior Tour player Brian Miller (pictured) of Springfield, Ohio, averaged 230.2 for eight games to lead Sunday's first round qualifying in the PBA Senior Dayton Classic at Capri Lanes.

Miller, a 53-year-old accounting supervisor, bowled games of 180, 213, 225, 222, 267, 236, 289 and 210 for a 1,842 pinfall. He has a 23-pin lead over four-time Senior Tour and two-time Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour titlist Bob Chamberlain of The Villages, Fla., in second with a 1,819 pinfall.

"On my first shot of the first game I threw an 8-10 split which wasn't an encouraging start and I thought this is going to be a long day," Miller said. "But as the block went on and the conditions changed I had the ball reaction I needed and strung together some good games."

Miller's previous best finish in PBA competition was third in a regular regional and a senior regional tournament.

The 144-player field will bowl another eight-game qualifying round on Monday after which the field will be cut to the top 32 players who will advance to best-of-five match play beginning Tuesday at 9 a.m. Match play continues all day on Tuesday with the Round of 8 and championship rounds scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
