200910PBAMikaKoivuniemi.jpg8-time PBA champion and PBA Player of the Year 2003-04, Mika Koivuniemi (pictured left), Finland, posted some big games en route to win his second European Bowling Tour title of the 2010 season in the 7th Istanbul Open Sunday at Timeout Bowling Center in Istanbul, Turkey.

In the title match, Koivuniemi fired games of 258 and 290 to fly past Mykhaylo Kalika, Ukraine, 548-424, and to pocket the 10.000 Euro top prize.

In the semifinals, Koivuniemi, seeded second, rolled 255 and 247 to eliminate No. 3 seed, Nina Flack, Sweden, 527-448, while No. 4 Kalika ousted Rebecka Larsen, Sweden, 502-467. Flack and Larsen received 8 pins handicap each game.

Kalika earned 6.000 Euro for second place. Larsen, who won the women's rankings, and Flack received 3.500 Euro each for third and fourth place.

2008IstanbulOpenLogo.jpg2010EBT08OilPattern.jpgThe 7th Istanbul Bowling Open was held from May 10-16, 2010 at 20-lane Timeout Bowling Center in Istanbul, Turkey and offered total prize fund of 68.000 Euro with 10.000 Euro going to the winner.

The oil pattern (pdf file) being used in Istanbul was USBC Sport Bowling compliant. The pattern was based on Kegel’s Navigation Sport Series pattern BOARDWALK but made two feet longer because of the extremely high friction lane surface.

The tournament was the 8th stop of the 2010 European Bowling Tour and one of the Tour's "Gold" tournaments. Since the Ankara Open and the Austria Challenge have been cancelled, the 2010 EBT Tour consists of 19 events - 2 EBT Platinum tournament (formerly Premier), 6 EBT Gold tournaments (formerly Major), 7 EBT Silver tournaments (formerly Challenger) and 4 EBT Satellite tournaments (new category).

A total of 48 players - the top 42 players from the qualifying plus the top 6 from the Desperado Squad - advanced to the finals on Sunday, May 16.

The top 8 qualifiers earned three byes, qualifiers 9-18 received two byes and qualifiers 19-28 bypassed the first round of the finals.

Rounds 1-5 consisted of four games starting from scratch. The field was trimmed to 38, 28, 18, 8 and then four who advanced to the semifinals (Round 6). Those four determined the finalists in two-game matches (No. 1 vs. No. 4 and No. 2 vs. No. 3). The winners bowled for the title and the 10.000 € top prize.
