Journeyman Bob Brady (pictured left) of Santa Monica, Calif., averaged 238 to lead the 228-player field after first round qualifying Monday in the Professional Bowlers Association Senior U.S. Open at the Suncoast Bowling Center.

The 58-year-old Brady, who returned to the Senior Tour last week after an 18-month break, had a 1,428 six-game pinfall with games of 259, 213, 264, 233, 224 and 235. He holds a 40-pin lead over Don Moser of Kentwood, Mich., in second with 1,388.

“I had some other priorities at home so I thought I’d take some time off to take care of those,” said Brady whose best Senior Tour finish is third. “Even though I wasn’t on the (Senior) Tour I was still practicing quite a bit and was bowling a lot of regional tournaments so my game stayed pretty sharp.”

Looking to win his third consecutive Senior U.S. Open title, Hall of Famer Wayne Webb (right) is in 10th with 1,318.

“It’s going to be the usual (Senior) U.S. Open where you’ll have to deal with a tougher condition and stay on top of the changes not only from day to day but lane to lane,” said Webb who also has won 20 Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour titles in his career. “But, I’m up to the challenge and I always enjoy coming back to bowl in Las Vegas.”

Webb won his third career Senior Tour title in April by capturing the PBA Senior Columbus Open in his new hometown of Columbus, Ohio. He also finished second in the season-opening Senior Dayton (Ohio) Classic.

Hall of Famer and four-time Senior Tour Player of the Year Tom Baker (left) of King, N.C., also trying to become the first three-time Senior U.S. Open winner, after winning back to back in 2005 and ’06, is in third with 1,373 and reigning PBA Senior Player of the Year Ron Mohr (right) of Eagle River, Alaska is seventh with 1,343.

Five countries are represented in the Senior U.S. Open including Canada, Germany, Japan, Sweden and the U.S.

All players will bowl two more six-game qualifying blocks Tuesday and Wednesday after which the field will be cut to the top 57 players for another nine-game qualifying round Thursday morning.

The field will then be cut to the top 24 players for three eight-game round-robin match play rounds conducted Thursday and Friday to determine the top four for the stepladder finals scheduled for Friday at 3:30 p.m. Pacific.
