Bob Handley leads Senior USBC Masters after Round 1

    06/15/10

    2010 PBA Senior Tour #6

South Point Bowling Center in Las Vegas, Nev. (June 13-18, 2010)

2010PBAS06BobHandley.jpgBob Handley (pictured) of Winter Park, Fla., averaged 234.2 Monday to take the opening round qualifying lead at the 2010 United States Bowling Congress Senior Masters.

Handley totaled 1,171 for five games, an average of 234.2, at the South Point Hotel and Casino Bowling Center. He had games of 223, 238, 227, 245 and 238 and leads a field of 297 of the top senior bowlers in the country.

"I really didn't expect this," said Handley, who has five career Professional Bowlers Association national titles and one PBA Senior Tour title. "I just wanted to hold my head above water. I never thought I would shoot this much, but it is a nice cushion. The goal isn't to lead, it's just to make the top 63."

Handley said one of the keys to his success came early in the round when he caught a fortunate break for a strike.

"The second frame of the first game I threw a horrible shot, went Brooklyn and struck," said Handley, who finished sixth at last week's Senior U.S. Open. "That really got my focus in the right place for the rest of the round."

2010PBASRogerKossert_small.jpgPaul McCordic of Sugarland, Texas, sits in second place at 1,144, while Roger Kossert (right) of Lithia, Fla., is third at 1,139. Kent Wagner of Palmetto, Fla., is fourth at 1,130 and last year's Senior Masters runner-up Ross Packard of San Jose, Calif., is fifth with 1,126.

2010PBASDaleTraber_small.jpgThere was one perfect game in the opening round, shot by Dean Jones of San Marcos, Texas. Jones fired 300 in the second game of the block and finished the day with a 1,056 total, good for 33rd place.

All participants will return for additional five-game blocks on Tuesday and Wednesday. The top 63 players after 15 games will join defending champion Dale Traber (left) of Cedarburg, Wis., and advance to the double-elimination match-play bracket on Thursday and Friday. The championship match is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. PDT on Friday.
