Bob Handley maintains one-pin lead at USBC Senior Masters

    2010 PBA Senior Tour #6

Germany's Peter Knopp moves into fifth place

2010PBAS06BobHandley.jpg2010PBAS06RogerKossert.jpgBob Handley (pictured left) of Winter Park, Fla., remained in the lead Tuesday after two rounds of qualifying at the 2010 United States Bowling Congress Senior Masters.

Handley has a 10-game total of 2,291, an average of 229.1, at the South Point Hotel and Casino Bowling Center. A day after shooting 1,171 in the opening round, Handley shot 1,120 to maintain his strong start. He leads Roger Kossert (right) of Lithia, Fla., by one pin.

"I didn't throw the ball quite as well as I did yesterday," said Handley, who has five career Professional Bowlers Association national titles and one PBA Senior Tour title. "I didn't have an open today but I didn't have as many strikes."

Handley said he is going to take it easy in Wednesday's final qualifying block.

"I'm very happy and should be very comfortable tomorrow," he said. "I'm just hoping not to get injured doing something stupid."

Kossert, meanwhile, also put together another strong block after bowling well on the opening day. He moved up from third to second with 2,290. Kossert opened the tournament with 1,139 and shot 1,151 on Tuesday. He started the day with games of 256 and 259.

"I'm fortunate I am in this position because I haven't bowled on the fresh yet and tomorrow I can experiment," said Kossert, a left-hander who has two career Senior Professional Bowlers Association Tour titles. "I need to learn off bowling on the fresh because that's what we will bowl matches on."

Even after bowling well in Round 1, Kossert decided he wanted to try and improve his ball reaction, so he drilled a new bowling ball in advance of Tuesday's second round.

2006EBT15PeterKnopp.jpg2010PBASDaleTraber.jpg"The ball I used yesterday would have been OK today, but the new one created a lot of area for me," Kossert said. "I actually probably threw the ball better yesterday, but I was able to strike more today."

Kenny Parks of Hammond, Ind., the 2008 Senior Masters champion, is in third place at 2,227 with Kent Wagner of Palmetto, Fla., in fourth at 2,218. Germany's Peter Knopp (pictured left) added 1,124 to the 1,077 from Monday to leap from 20th to fifth place with 2,201.

All participants will return Wednesday for the final five-game block. The top 63 players after 15 games will join defending champion Dale Traber (right) of Cedarburg, Wis., and advance to the double-elimination match-play bracket on Thursday and Friday. The championship match is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. PDT on Friday.
