Ron Oldfield wins his second ISB Tour title in ALPA Senior Open

    Farida Pascoal-Blom wins her first title in the women's division

Germany. It was the second title on the inaugural International Seniors Bowling Tour and the second 2.000 Euro pay check for Oldfield in just three events, while Pascoal-Blom took the 1.000 Euro women's top prize for the first time.

    The ALPA Senior Open was the third stop of the 2010 International Seniors Bowling Tour and was held from June 30 - July 4. 2010 at Alpa-Bowl in Buxtehude. Germany. The tournament drew 75 players - 60 men and 15 women - from 10 countries, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, England, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and United States.

    All players must bowl at least two blocks of six games. Unlimited re-entries were allowed. The two highest six-game series were added to a 12-game qualifying total.

    50 to 55 year-old players did not receive any age bonus, a 56-year-old got 1 pin handicap per game, a 57 year-old got 2 pins, and so on. Maximum handicap was 20 pins par game.

    12 women - 2 from qualifying from Wed-Thu, 8 from qualifying from Wed-Sat plus the top 2 from the Desperado Squad - and 28 men - 4 from qualifying from Wed-Thu, 20 from qualifying from Wed-Sat plus the top 4 from the Desperado Squad - advanced to the finals on Sunday.

    Pascoal-Blom averaged 196 scratch to lead the women's qualifying with 2472 12-game total (1259, 1213) including 10 pins bonus per game. Oldfield made the first cut in fourth place with 2823 pinfall total (1394, 1429) and an average of 221.29.

Chris Vandamme, Belgium, who won the second ISB Tour stop in Bologna, Italy, last month, was second with 2886 scratch (0 bonus) and an average of 240.50. Barry Horne (right), United States, who rolled a 300 game in qualifying, was third with 2833 (7 hc).

    All finalists bowled six games starting from scratch. The top 8 women and the top 20 men advanced to the semifinals. Marianne Pelz, Germany, set the pace in the women's division with 1291 six-game total including 4 pins handicap each. Pascoal-Blom was close behind in second place with 1276 and was followed by Yvette Murrath, Belgium, who won the first ISB stop in Monheim, Germany, with 1247 (3).

    Ahlquist posted another 1500-series to maintain the pole in the men's division. The Swede had games of 259, 248, 278, 225, 247 and 254 for 1511 scratch, an average of 251.83, and 1541 including handicap. His compatriot Ulf Lönngren was a distant second with 1414 (9 hc) with Vandamme in third place with 1404. Oldfield had a slow start into the finals and made the cut to the top 20 in 19th place with 1301.

    The remaining 8 women and 20 men bowled another four games with the pinfall from the quarterfinal being carried forward.

    Pascoal-Blom regained the lead with the sole 800-plus series (801) and a 2117 pinfall total. Iggi Zech, Germany, was close behind with 793 and 2067 (12hc). Erna Buysse, Belgium, was third with 2054 (16 hc) and Barbara Karnasch, Germany, took the fourth and final spot to advance with 2024 (scratch).

    Ahlquist averaged a modest 232.00 for the round and held a 181-pin lead over Horne, 2489 to 2308. Oldfield jumped from 19th to third place and was tied with Horne after averaging 237.75. Host proprietor Kalle Gaiser moved into fourth place (2301, 11 hc), while Lönngren and Vandamme slipped to 5th and 7th place with 2292 and 2267, respectively.

    Swede Christer Danielsson led the round with 979 4-game total including games of 258, 237, 195 and 289 to leapfrog from 18th to sixth place with 2292. Rounding out the top 10, who advanced to the championship round were 8. Jack Smith, England (2266, 2 hc), 9. Thomas Witt, Germany (2249) and Dominique De Nolf, Belgium (2245), both zero handicap.

    The top 4 women and the top 10 men rolled another 4-game block with the 14-game pinfall total including handicap to determine the winners.

    Pascoal-Blom wrapped up the women's title with a solid 754 series to finish with 2911 pinfall total. Zech had 762 and Buysse 745 to maintain second (650 Euro) and third place (420 Euro) with 2877 and 2863. Karnasch rolled the highest series of 800, but as she didn't get any handicap she had to settle for fourth place with 2824, worth 300 Euro.

    The men's title race was decided in the final game. Leader Ahlquist struggled in the first game (165) but maintained a slim lead after games of 216 and 207. When the Swede finished with a 166 scratch game, Oldfield, who had games of 228, 238 and 228) needed 206 in his final game to overtake Ahlquist by one pin.

    The Englishman closed out his set with 208 to beat out Ahlqvist fort he top spot by three pins, 3266 to 3263. Vandamme posted a huge 275 game to jump into third place with 3249. Gaiser used his home advantage to finish with games of 234, 234 and 248 to help grab the fourth place with 3233.

    The International Seniors Bowling Tour takes a short break before heading to Latem, Belgium, for the 1st Flanders Senior Open July 21-25, 2010, at Real Bowling Latem.
