    2006 Australian Super 6 Series #2

Bowling Alley: AMF Sunshine in Sunshine, Vic, Australia

2006ASS02DavidPorto.jpg 20-year-old David Porto claimed the biggest victory in his career when he defeated another youngster, 20-year-old Andrew Tonkin, two-games-to-none in the championship match of the 2006 Australian Open in Melbourne, Vic, Australia.

Ninety of Australia's elite bowlers convereged on AMF Sunshine Bowl on Easter Friday to compete in the 2006 Australian Open. With a new revised format and multiple re-entries comprising each bowler's 5 game high block the race to make the top 25 cut was intense with the qualifiers' names changing regularly between squads.

After the 8 squads of qualifying the top 25 qualifiers plus the top 3 from the 'Desperado Squad' prepared for a best-of-three single-elimination final. George Frilingos, David Porto, Jarrod Lean and Jason Belmonte filled the first 4 spots after qualifying and bypassed the match play first round.

Youth seemed to be the secret ingredient in progressing through the final with youngsters Michael Zentveld, Andrew Tonkin and Jason Walsh easily disposing of their older opposition in Round 1.

The top 4 all proved their worth as top qualifiers by disposing of their opposition in Round 2. However, the pairing into Round 3 was not that easy with 20-year-old Andrew Tonkin defeating 2005 Australian ranking leader George Frilingos, 2-1, Terry Silva defeating Jarrod Lean, 2-0, while David Porto and Jason Belmonte were both stretched to 3 games to sneak through to the semi-final.

The semi-final matches saw Andrew Tonkin beat Jason Belmonte 2-1 (194-179 in the decider) and David Porto defeat fellow lefty Terry Silva, 2-0, to progress through to the final.

The final was a one-sided affair with David Porto dominating the scoring. Porto flew past his opponent with victories of 211-160 and 257-140 to take out the biggest win of his career.
