Pawel Bielski comes from behind to win 5th International Wroclaw Open by Hammer

    Daria Pająk wins women's rankings at Galeria Rozrywki Miraz in Wroclaw, Poland

    2011EBT02PawelBielski.jpg 2010EBT15OliverBlase.jpg Paweł Bielski (pictured left) won three consecutive matches to claim the title in the 5th International Wroclaw Open by Hammer Sunday en route to become the first European Bowling Tour champion from Poland in the 11-year-history of the Tour.

    Bielski, who took the fourth and last place for the four-player stepladder finals, ousted No. 3 Alessandro Silletti, Italy, in the opening match. 224-194. He went on to defeat No. 2 Dennis Eklund, Sweden, in the semifinal, 194-168, to advance to the title match against No. 1 seed Oliver Blase (right), Germany.

    The final was decided in two games with the total pinfall determining the winner. Bielski came out of the gates quickly and took a huge 62-pin lead after game #1, 245-183. Blasé rebounded with a 233 game but Bielski cruised to the title with 226 for a 471-416 victory.

    The top 40 qualifiers spearheaded by qualifying leader Falco Gutsche, Germany, advanced to the first round of the finals and bowled four games with the qualifying pinfall being carried forward.

    Gutsche fell to seventh place behind an 822 series while his compatriot Tim Friedrichs (left) leaped from fourth to first place with 2413 or an average of 243.1 for ten games. Eklund (right) posted the field-best 1005 series (251.25 avg.) to jump from tenth to second place with Blasé in third, Siletti fourth and Bielski in sixth place.

Laura Beuthner (right), Germany, who rolled the sole 300 game of the tournament in the qualifying, missed the cut in 26th place.

    The top 20 rolled another four games in Final Round Two to cut to the top 8 who advanced to round robin match play. Eklund again posted the highest block (995, 248.75 avg.) to overtake the lead after 14 games with 3375 and an overall average of 241.07. Blasé slipped to second place with Friedrichs third, Siletti fourth and Bielski in seventh place.

    Blasé won all but the first match in the seven-game match play round to earn the top seed with 5160 pinfall total including 130 bonus. Eklund went 5-2 in match play to secure the No. 2 seed with 5127. Siletti (also won five of his seven matches but was a distant third with 4806 immediately followed by Bielski (5-2), who outdistanced Friedrichs (1-6) by 91 pins, 4790 to 4699, to take the fourth and last place for the stepladder finals.

    2011IWOLogo_small.jpg The 5th International Wroclaw Open by Hammer (IWO) is the first of six European Bowling Tour "Satellite" events of the 2011 season. The tournament was held from Monday Feb. 14 through Sunday Feb. 20, 2011 at bowling center Galeria Rozrywki Miraz, a 10-laner in Wroclaw, Poland.

    Since the Viborg International in Viborg, Denmark originally scheduled for July 30-Aug. 7, 2011 has been cancelled, the 2011 European Bowling Tour consists of 21 tour stops in 17 countries including two Platinum, six Gold, seven Silver and six Satellite tournaments.

    The winner of a Platinum tournament receives 250 ranking points, the winner of a Gold tournament gets 150, the winner of a Silver tournament earns 100, and the winner of a Satellite tournament such as the International Wroclaw Open gets 50 ranking points. The total prize fund of the 2011 Tour exceeds one million Euro.

    Participants in the IWO competed for total prize money of 26.000 Euro or approximately US $35,200 with 4.250 Euro going to the winner, 2.750 to the runner-up and 2.100 and 1.800 to third and fourth place finishers, respectively.

    The tournament was contested on a 41 ft. lane conditioning pattern (pdf file).

    Qualifying (6 games, unlimited re-entries) ran from Monday, Feb. 14 through Saturday, Feb. 19. The top 40 players from the qualifying advanced to the finals on Sunday Feb. 20. The pinfall will be carried forward from the qualifying through the stepladder finals. Women receive 8 pins handicap each game, a standard for women on the European Bowling Tour.

    The top 40 qualifiers bowled 4 games with the top 20 advancing to the second round. Those 20 bowled another 4 games to cut to the top 8 who advanced to round robin match play. The top 4 players after seven match play games (20 pins bonus per win, 10 for a tie, 5 pins bonus for each game between 250 and 300) advanced to the stepladder finals.

    Stepladder matches one and two were decided in one game, while the championship match featured two games decided by total pinfall. The No. 4 seed bowled the No. 3 seed, the winner took on the No. 2 seed and the winner of that semifinal match earned the right to bowl the No. 1 seed for the title.

    The top 16 men and the top 16 women at the end of the 2011 EBT season will qualify for the 2012 EBT Masters to be held in conjunction with the 3rd Dream Bowl Palace Open in Unterföhring near Munich, Germany April 30 and May 1, 2012.
