New leaders emerge in Singles and Doubles at USBC Open Championships

Edward Rede (pictured left) of El Paso, Texas, was hesitant about leaving his family to compete at the 2011 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships, but knowing they were home watching on the tournament's webcams made him much more comfortable on the lanes.
Rede's mother watched intently and relayed frame-by-frame updates to his wife, Solanja, and he definitely didn't disappoint his fans as he charged into the Regular Singles lead with games of 258, 299 and 257 for an 814 series at the National Bowling Stadium on March 18. William Vincent Jr. of Louisville, Ky., previously held the lead with 792.
"I knew it would be hard for me to leave," said Rede, whose wife gave birth to their third son on Feb. 9. "Initially, I still wanted to make the trip, but I thought it was unfair to have her stay and take care of everything at home. I'm glad they were able to watch on the webcams, though. I received a congratulatory text from her as soon as I was done, and I thank her for all of the support she has given me."
The 34-year-old right-hander added 680 in team and 660 in doubles for a 2,154 all-events total, which left him 10 pins shy of the top spot in Regular All-Events. Joel Carlson of Omaha, Neb., leads with 2,164. Steve Sutphin of Howey in the Hills, Fla., rolled the only other 800 of the 2011 event (827) in Doubles on March 6.
Just a few lanes away from Rede's singles success, Mike Kruse Sr. and Mike Kruse Jr. (right) of Vermillion, S.D., were celebrating the Regular Doubles lead.
The elder Kruse rolled games of 225, 249 and 256 for a 730 series, while his son added 248, 246 and 214 for 708 and a 1,438 total. Chris Galovits of West Allis, Wis., and Ed Seliga of Kenosha, Wis., previously held the lead with 1,408.
The younger Kruse, a 29-year-old right-hander, continues to have great success at the Stadium and has averaged 217.5 in five visits to Reno. This year, he added 740 in singles and 611 in team for a 2,059 all-events total (228.77). Kruse Sr., a 50-year-old right-hander, had 694 in singles and 593 in team for 2,017.
The 2011 Open Championships will feature 12,837 five-player teams. The event kicked off March 4 and will run for 122 consecutive days, concluding on July 3.
USBC Hall of Famer Glenn Allison (pictured left) of Anaheim, Calif., added to his impressive resume and reached another milestone at the USBC Open Championships on March 19.
The 80-year-old right-hander marched down Center Aisle at the National Bowling Stadium and into the record books as the 15th bowler in history to make 60 tournament appearances. His wife, Marsha, proudly looked on as he was presented with a plaque, chevron and gold money clip to commemorate the achievement.
"The last 60 years have been really wonderful," said Allison, who was joined on the lanes by fellow Hall of Famer Jimmy Schroeder of Tonawanda, N.Y., who also is a member of both the 60-Year and 100,000-Pin Clubs. "I have really enjoyed all the competition and all the friends I have made in this sport. It was a really exciting day."
Allison, a four-time Open Championships titlist (Classic Doubles in 1962, Classic Team in 1964 and '66 and Classic Singles in 1970), finished his milestone appearance with 567 in singles, 541 in team and 472 in doubles for a 1,580 all-events total. In 60 tournaments, he has knocked down 109,509 pins for a career average of 198.
Schroeder closed out his 63rd consecutive visit to the tournament with a 1,565 all-events total and increased his career pinfall total to 112,478. He is third on the all-time pinfall list behind the late Joe Norris (123,770) and active pinfall leader Bill Lillard Sr. of Houston (116,828), who will add to his total this week when he competes for the 64th straight year.

Yonan, a 20-year-old right-hander, made his first Open Championships appearance and saw his quick success as a stepping stone to a possible future in bowling. He recently rolled the first 300 of his career, but knows that one can't compare.
"In the first one, I was only nervous on the last couple of shots, but this time, I started getting nervous around the seventh or eighth frame," said Yonan, whose 300 came between games of 225 and 185 for a 710 series in doubles. "This one also means a lot more. Now, I can always say I have a 300 at Nationals. Not a lot of people can say that, especially their first time."
Yonan added a 603 series and singles and 579 in team for a 1,892 all-events total. He and Greg Pizl of Antigo, Wis., also a first-time participant, teamed up for a 1,308 doubles total.
Walker's 300 came between games of 172 and 278 for a 750 singles series, which is sixth overall. The 31-year-old right-hander, who made his 16th Open Championships appearance, added 633 in doubles and 515 in team for a 1,898 all-events total.
Henson (left) made his return to the tournament lanes after taking a year off to help Northgate Lanes in Galesburg, Ill., get back up and running after a fire in January of 2010.
The 48-year-old right-hander closed out his ninth tournament appearance with 12 consecutive strikes to go along with games of 197 and 203 for a 700 singles series. He added a 560 series in team and 504 in doubles for a 1,764 all-events total.
"It takes me a little while to get warmed up, so things didn't go as well as I'd hoped in doubles," Henson said. "I decided to try something new for singles, so I made a ball change and moved left, and everything fell into place. I knew what I had to do and where to play, and I really got lined up in the second game."
Gary Exner Jr. of Racine, Wis., rolled three consecutive 248 games during singles on March 21 to tie the Open Championships triplicate record set by Kevin Shafer of Eaton, Ind., in 2009.
Exner finished with a 744 singles series, which is just outside of the top 10 in Regular Singles, and added 608 in doubles and 578 in team for a 1,930 all-events total.
On his way into the record books, Exner was focused on bowling well and making good shots and was unaware of the record.
"I didn't know it was a record until I was told," said Exner, who made his second Open Championships appearance. "It's awesome to know I will be included in the record books forever. This was also the first year I had a chance to bowl with my father, so that made this year's event very special."
William Scheiwer Sr., 77, of Canonsburg, Pa., will be the third bowler this year, and 132nd in history, to join the tournament's 50-Year Club when he marches down Center Aisle on March 23.
Ralph Krueger of West Bend, Wis., won't be far behind, and will add his name to the list on March 27. Krueger is just 67 years old, and will be the fourth of 14 bowlers slated to reach 50 years in 2011.
Finally, Terrence Syring of Bay City, Mich., will be the first defending champion to put his title on the line this year. The 27-year-old right-hander took home the 2010 Regular Singles title with games of 276, 258 and 299 for an 833 series.
