New Yorkers sneak into Regular Team lead at USBC Open Championships

There have been a lot of challengers in the Regular Team event at the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships this week, but Strike Synergy of Honeoye Falls, N.Y. (pictured left), was the first team to finish the job and claim the top spot in the standings.
On April 4, anchor bowler Pat Donaghue stepped up in the 10th frame to give his team the lead. He calmly delivered two clutch strikes and seven pins for a 3,254 total, five pins better than previous leader, Professional Image Center 1 of Wichita, Kan.
The 51-year-old right-hander said he simply was focused on throwing the best possible shots he could.
"I knew we were close," said Donaghue, who made his 14th USBC Open Championships appearance. "But, I didn't know we could take the lead. My goal was still the same. I wanted to hit my target and hit the pocket. I wanted to give myself a chance to get as many pins as possible. I didn't know we took the lead until the final ball. This feels wonderful, fantastic and gratifying all at the same time."
Strike Synergy got off to a slow start with a 979 game, but bounced back with 1,121 and 1,154. Donaghue led the way with a 728 series and was followed by Troy McClure (673), David Arida (639), Paul Perotto (611) and Kevin Donaghue (603).
Donaghue was elated to be able to share the moment with his son.
"It's great to bowl with my son," said Donaghue, who is a member of the Rochester USBC Bowling Association Hall of Fame. "I taught him the game. He respects the game and has worked his tail off. He throws the ball better than I do, but I am a little bit more accurate than he is. He tells me when to make changes, and I tell him when he is a little wild."
Another father-son duo made a run at the Regular Team lead earlier April 4 but came up one pin short.
Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Famer David Husted and his son, Corey Husted, already are in the record books as the first father/son to win a PBA regional doubles title, and this time, they helped Mark Baker Bowling of Milwaukie, Ore. (pictured right), to games of 1,003, 1,124 and 1,121 for a 3,248 total, which now is third overall.
The group had a shot at the lead as Corey Husted stepped up to close things out, but the young anchor left a 7 pin on his first shot in the 10th frame.
Mark Baker Bowling was led by David Grooms, who rolled a 718 series, and he was joined by 14-time PBA champion David Husted (653), Mark Baker (637), Bob Porter (635) and Corey Husted (605).
"It was a lot of fun," said Baker, who made his sixth Open Championships appearance. "We knew we needed 225 a man if we were going to get there. Bob punched out, Dave spared, I doubled, and I knew Husted was going to get them, so it came down to Corey. He threw it good, it hit the pocket and he got nine. That's all you can ask for. It was a blast."
Bowlers Edge Pro Shop of Neenah, Wis. (pictured left), put its Regular Team title on the line in front of hundreds of spectators at the USBC Open Championships on April 2, but a rough start proved to be too much for the defending champions to overcome.
The group struggled to an 866 start before things fell into place. Team captain Brad Kuhr led a second-game charge with 10 consecutive strikes before a 9 pin ended his run. He helped his team to a 1,189 effort and 1,108 finale for a 3,163 total, which is just outside of the top 10.
Kuhr finished with a 678 series and was followed by Kenny Kempf (656), Dan Paul (626), Timothy Rice (616) and Jason Wendt (587). Kuhr, Rice and Wendt also teamed up to win the Regular Team title in 2003.
Bowlers Edge Pro Shop also bowled well in doubles and singles.
Wendt and Kempf moved into fourth place in Regular Doubles with 1,419, and they helped their team into third place in Team All-Events with 9,728. Kempf led the way with a 2,027 all-events total and was followed by Rice (2,015), Wendt (1,958), Kuhr (1,952) and Paul (1,776).

Despite not finding their way back to the top of the leaderboard, it was a very exciting day for Kempf, and one that he and his teammates will never forget.
"Holding the trophy as a team was quite a moment," Kempf said. "I think coming back and shooting 1,189 was big for us, too. I think that showed a lot about us as a team and why we are champions. Anything can happen with us."
Nolan Harlamert of Dayton, Ohio, is one of the hardest-working team captains at the USBC Open Championships, and this year, he brought 21 teams to the National Bowling Stadium.
Those 100 bowlers had the opportunity to be a part of tournament history as they helped Harlamert celebrate his 50th Open Championships appearance April 1. He became the 134th bowler in history to reach the coveted milestone.
Harlamert knew what to expect because he was present when his friend, William DeHaven of Tucson, Ariz., reached 50 years at the 2009 event in Las Vegas. But that still couldn't prepare him for the emotion he would feel when finally walking down Center Aisle and achieving his goal.
"Today was really nice," said Harlamert, who received a plaque, chevron and diamond lapel pin to commemorate his achievement. "I had an idea of what to expect because I watched William DeHaven achieve the same goal. I was able to keep him going because he was going to the tournament with our group. It was still new to me, though. It was a great feeling and nice to have my group watching me."
Harlamert began his Open Championships journey at the 1961 event in Detroit and has only missed one event since, making this year 46 in a row. The 72-year-old has brought an average of 28 teams per event since 1980, and next year, he intends to bring at least 21 again, and possibly a few more.
On the lanes this year, Harlamert rolled a 252 series in team. In 50 tournament appearances, he has knocked down 64,171 pins for a career average of 164.5. He did not compete in doubles and singles this year.
Also in Reno this week was USBC Hall of Famer and three-time Open Championships titlist Bob Hart Sr. of Suwanee, Ga., who made his 55th tournament appearance April 5.
On a squad filled with hall of famers, Professional Bowlers Association champions and a former Team USA member, Freeman Faison of Wilson, N.C., is the bowler who found his way into the spotlight with a perfect game at the USBC Open Championships on April 3.
Gerald Cutshall Jr. of Houston couldn't have picked a better time to roll the first 300 of his bowling career, which he did in his first game of singles April 4.
Faison (pictured left), a 59-year-old right-hander, was one of three bowlers on his squad to start a game with nine consecutive strikes and the only one to get the job done as he polished off the seventh 300 of this year's event in dramatic fashion.
Faison's 10th shot was perfect, but his next offering drifted high and the 4-9 split briefly stood before both pins tipped over. His nerves got the best of him on his final shot, but a Brooklyn strike looks like any other on the scoreboard.
"This is the first time I've even been close to something like this here, and I was just hoping to keep my legs under me and get out of the ball cleanly," said Faison, who made his 16th Open Championships appearance. "I felt pretty good about the 11th shot, but it jumped on me. Then, I really tugged the last shot, but got a great break."
Faison's 300 came between games of 199 and 201 for a 700 singles series and was extra special because he got to share the moment with his daughter, Sunny, who made her first Open Championships appearance.
He added a 630 series in team and 502 in doubles for a 1,832 all-events total, while Sunny finished her debut with 575 in singles, 483 in team and 446 in doubles for 1,504.
After struggling in his first six games at the Stadium this year, shooting 526 in team and 497 in doubles, Cutshall (pictured right), a 61-year-old right-hander, turned to his five decades of bowling experience and was able to manipulate his approach and delivery in order to slow the ball down and get the reaction he wanted.
His only regret once his accomplishment started to set in was that his wife, Dee, was not present to see it. She wasn't feeling well and decided it would be best to remain at the hotel to get some additional rest.
"I don't know how to describe the way I feel right now," said Cutshall, an engineer at Dow Chemical, who made his 13th Open Championships appearance and finished with a career-best 1,769 all-events total. "I don't bowl as much as I used to, but I still average around 200 in league. This is probably the best I've thrown the ball for a string of strikes, and I'll never forget it."
Team USA member Shannon O'Keefe (pictured left) and her husband, Bryan O'Keefe (right), a Team USA assistant coach, will hit the lanes at the National Bowling Stadium on April 9 and 10.
