West Coast bowlers take doubles lead at USBC Open Championships

Bowling doubles together on the championship lanes for the first time, the duo had a 1,466 total to overtake Charles Surina of Bolingbrook, Ill., and Bill Guszczo of Orland Park, Ill. (1,447). Hohlbein had games of 258, 236 and 300 for a 794 series, while Copeland added 201, 276 and 195 for 672.
"I noticed I really wasn't very nervous," said Hohlbein, whose 300 was the 14th of this year's USBC Open Championships. "I just took a deep breath before each ball in the 10th frame and tried to make good shots. I felt comfortable on that pair of lanes, which I know helped me out."
Hohlbein, a 41-year-old left-hander, added 646 in team and 596 in singles for a 2,036 total in all-events, a career high in five appearances at the Open Championships.
Copeland, who just learned he had been elected to the Portland Bowling Association Hall of Fame, made his 16th appearance at the Open Championships.
"I wasn't really very loose," said Copeland, a 44 year-old right-hander who owns Molalla Bowl in Molalla, Ore. "I wasn't able to create much room, but just tried to keep the ball in play. I wasn't completely sure what the lead score was at the time, but I figured we had a chance to get close. Fortunately, I made a good shot in the 10th frame, which put us over the top. I've bowled with different groups over the years. It's always been for fun in the past, but now I want to have a chance to win. I think I made a good choice joining up with this team."
Copeland added 682 in singles and 640 in team for a 1,994 all-events total.
Two bowlers on the same doubles and singles squad rolled honor scores at the USBC Open Championships on April 25.
Adam Cardwell (pictured left) of Woodbury, Minn., put together games of 256, 266 and 285 for an 807 series, which moved him into third place in Regular Singles. Matt Weggen of Muscatine, Iowa, leads with 826. Last week, Weggen shot 806 in doubles and 826 in singles to become the first bowler in tournament history to roll back-to-back 800s.
"This is really special to me," Cardwell said. "Any honor score you have is special, but to do it here, with all the prestige of this tournament, is very meaningful. I've been knocking at the door of having an honor score the past couple of years in the Open Championships, and it finally happened."
Cardwell, a 33-year-old right-hander who bowls at Flaherty's Bowl, was an All-American at the University of Nebraska during the 1998-99 season. Along with his 807 at the National Bowling Stadium, he had 640 in doubles and 559 in team and finished his 13th Open Championships appearance with a 2,006 all-events effort this year.
Earlier in the squad, about 20 lanes away from Cardwell, Mike McBride (right) of Washington, Ill., rolled the 15th perfect game of the 2011 Open Championships in his second game of doubles. The 300 came between games of 206 and 197 for a 703 and 1,248 doubles effort.
Due to the recent storm damage in the Midwest, the 35-year-old right-hander almost was unable to make the trip.
"What a way to finish a really rough few days," McBride said. "We didn't know if we'd actually get here to bowl. We drove to St. Louis for our flight the night the tornado hit there. Our hotel had some minor damage, and of course, the airport was closed because of the damage there. So, we changed our plane tickets and had to drive to Indianapolis to catch our new flights."
McBride, who was bowling in his seventh Open Championships, added 714 in singles and 627 in team for a 2,044 all-events total.
There will be two live streaming broadcasts from the USBC Open Championships this week.
First, Linds Lakers of Minneapolis, the 2002 and 2006 Team All-Events winner, will take to the tournament lanes April 29 at 11:30 p.m. EDT.
On April 30 at 5:30 p.m. EDT, USBC Hall of Famer Carolyn Dorin-Ballard and her star-studded team will make their run at Open Championships glory.
