Florida bowler joins 50-Year Club at USBC Open Championships

Carlo Simonelli (pictured) of Brooksville, Fla., became the 140th bowler in 108 years of United States Bowling Congress Open Championships competition to make 50 tournament appearances when he marched down Center Aisle at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev., on May 13.
The 78-year-old right-hander made his tournament debut at the 1960 event in Toledo, Ohio, and only has missed two events since.
"The ceremony was very inspirational," said Simonelli, who bowls league at Mariner Bowl. "It was very well done. The walk out was nice, and I thought it was a very pleasant experience. Everybody did a nice job. Even the other bowlers were happy for me. A lot of people who didn't know me came up to congratulate me."
Now that Simonelli has reached 50 years, he plans to continue competing at the USBC Open Championships as long as his health permits.
"I'm definitely going to Baton Rouge (La.) next year," Simonelli said. "I will be 79 next year. I know Joe Norris bowled into his 90s. If I go to my 90s, I could pick up 12 more years. Sixty would really be nice."
Simonelli finished his 50th year of competition with 535 in singles, 485 in doubles and 446 in team for a 1,466 all-events total. In 50 tournaments, he has knocked down 81,596 pins for a 181.3 average.
Two bowlers added their names to the USBC Open Championships record books with perfect games this week. One finally is healthy after a serious accident in 2009, and the other made it back into the spotlight after more than two decades.
Not long after competing at the 2009 Open Championships, Donnie Maloney (pictured left) of Georgetown, Ohio, thought his bowling career was over.
After a lawnmower fell on his head and caused severe bleeding, Maloney had a stroke, but he battled back and returned to the tournament lanes in 2010, though not at full strength. This year, however, he was healthy and ready to make up for lost time at the National Bowling Stadium.
The 46-year-old right-hander began doubles with games of 179 and 219 before firing the 25th perfect game of the 2011 Open Championships for a 698 total. He added 649 in team and 614 in singles for a career-best 1,961 all-events total.
"This was unbelievable," said Maloney, who made his 15th Open Championships appearance. "Right after Las Vegas, I had an accident and a stroke. It's amazing that I even bowled. I still can't believe what just happened. I'm just happy to be upright and happy to be here."
When Curt Aemisegger of Wauconda, Ill., achieved his childhood dream of winning a championship on bowling's biggest stage, it came at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center when he helped his team to the Regular Team title at the 1990 Open Championships.
More than two decades later, the 55-year-old right-hander returned to The Biggest Little City in the World and found an even bigger stage for his latest accomplishment, a perfect game at the nearby 78-lane National Bowling Stadium, which has hosted the Open Championships seven times since opening its doors in 1995.
"This is the ultimate," said Aemisegger, who made his 33rd Open Championships appearance. "We all dream of coming here and shooting a perfect game. In my career, I've shot PBA (Professional Bowlers Association) 300s, leagues 300s and even Sport 300s, but this one is the dream."
Aemisegger's perfect game Monday was the 26th of the 2011 tournament, and he followed it with games of 214 and 232 for a 746 doubles series. He teamed with 2003 Team All-Events champion Vince Biondo III for a 1,350 total. George Rowan and Rod Singer of Columbus, Ohio, lead Regular Doubles with 1,494.
Aemisegger closed out his 2011 Open Championships campaign with 683 in team and 603 in singles for a career-best 2,032 all-events total.
Classic Lanes Menomonee Falls of Waukesha, Wis., moved into third place in Team All-Events with a 10,030 total at the National Bowling Stadium on May 13, becoming the fifth team this year and 29th in tournament history to eclipse the 10,000 mark. Last year, the group shot 10,131 on the way to a third-place finish.
This time, the team was led by Chad Kloss, who made his return to the USBC Open Championships after a stint as an exempt player on Lumber Liquidators Professional Bowlers Association Tour, and posted a 2,075 all-events total.
He was followed by Chad Maas (2,010), two-time titlist Jeff Nimke (2,003), two-time winner Steve Brinkman (1,973) and Scott Helm (1,969). The group has bowled together for several years now, and every year they feel like they get better.
"The more times we bowl together, the better we seem to get," said Nimke, who made his 30th Open Championships appearance. "We just needed a couple of breaks, and we might have been able to get the lead this year. We'll be looking forward to trying again next year."
On May 16, Pat McCarthy of West Haven, Conn., and Tony DeLucia of East Haven, Conn., moved into third place in Regular Doubles with a 1,463 total. McCarthy led the way with games of 278, 245 and 213 for a 736 series, while DeLucia was close behind with 214, 259 and 254 for 727.
Sterling Minke Sr. of Englewood, Fla., will become the 141st bowler in tournament history to make 50 tournament appearances. He will make his milestone march down Center Aisle on May 19 at 11:30 p.m. EDT and receive a plaque, chevron and diamond lapel pin to commemorate his achievement.
There will be one live streaming broadcast from the USBC Open Championships this week.
Soon-to-be USBC Hall of Famer Jeff Richgels (pictured right) of Oregon, Wis., will lead his Turbo 2-N-1 teammates back into the National Bowling Stadium to try to improve on last year's 14th-place finish in Regular Team.
Richgels owns four titles on the tournament lanes, including two in 2005 when he teamed with Steve Richter to claim the Regular Doubles title, and Richter, Marc McDowell, Gail Myers Jr. and Mike Shady to win Team All-Events.
Their team event will be shown live on BOWL.com on May 20 at 11:30 p.m. EDT.
