Defending champions make run, but won't repeat at USBC Open Championships

Bo Goergen (left) of Sanford, Mich., has enjoyed a long career at the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships, and he has gotten better with age and experience.
In 2009, his 31st year on the championship lanes, he made his way into the spotlight when he rolled an 862 series, the highest set in tournament history, and claimed the Regular Singles title. A year later, he shared that winning feeling with his teammates as he helped Northern Lanes Pro Shop of Midland, Mich. (pictured), to the 2010 Team All-Events crown.
So much success meant higher expectations for the 50-year-old right-hander as he entered the 2011 tournament looking to join Les Zikes in the record books with victories in three consecutive years, but even though he didn't find his way back to the winner's circle, he and his teammates had another successful run at Reno's National Bowling Stadium.
For the third straight year, the group is leaving the USBC Open Championships in the top 10 in Regular Team (10th with 3,368), and the defending champions just missed the top 10 in Team All-Events with a 9,847 total. Turbo 2-N-1 Grips 1 of Madison, Wis. (left), leads the team event with 3,473, and K & K Bowling Services 5 of Las Vegas (right) tops the Team All-Events standings with 10,283.
"The expectations were very high this year, especially after the practice sessions and great communication we had while preparing to come out here," said Goergen, who made his 33rd Open Championships appearance. "We feel that we have a team that's capable of shooting the numbers it's going to take to win this year, but we made a few mistakes and left some pins out there. I'm personally disappointed in my own performance, but we'll be back next year to give it another shot."
Canadian star and former collegiate standout at Saginaw Valley State University, Dan MacLelland, battled a foot injury, but led the way for Northern Lanes Pro Shop this year with a 2,102 all-events total. In his six-year Open Championships career, the 26-year-old right-hander has averaged 229.3, but now will say goodbye to the tournament in order to compete as an exempt player on the Lumber Liquidators Professional Bowlers Association Tour.
Former Team USA member Derwin Pitre, who owns two perfect games at the Open Championships, added a 2,007 all-events total and was followed by newcomer to the team Andrew Schnebelt (1,957), Goergen (1,929) and left-hander Dale Hofmeister (1,852).
When John Conway (center) of Boise, Idaho, heard his name echo throughout the National Bowling Stadium right before practice began at the USBC Open Championships on May 27, it took him a second to process what was happening.
As he walked toward Center Aisle to meet Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority Communications Manager Ben McDonald and USBC Open Championships Tournament Manager Duane Hagen, it finally sunk in that he had just become the proud owner of a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck through the USBC Eagle's Nest, a club formed by USBC and the RSCVA to recognize team captains who fielded teams in 2010 and 2011.
"Well, I didn't know where I was at when I heard my name announced," said Conway, who bowls league at Westy's Garden Lanes. "Everybody kept on pushing me to go up and receive the award. I just can't give you enough words to say how much I appreciate it. This will probably be the only thing in my life that I will never forget."
The 84-year-old right-hander, who made his tournament debut at the 1964 event in Oakland, Calif., has been a dedicated team captain for 43 years. When the tournament made its first trip Reno in 1977, he brought along an entire flight full of bowlers.
Conway, who earned the third of four trucks being given away through the club this year, has made 43 Open Championships appearances, and each one has been special for him. He has enjoyed competing in the tournament and especially loves the city of Reno.
"It's been really nice to go to a different area every year," said Conway, who is a life member of the Idaho State Bowling Association. "You meet different people, and make a lot of friends. I really enjoy coming to Reno, though. I always have, and I always will."

Now, 31 years later, in his 44th consecutive Open Championships appearance, Chamberlain added another milestone to his list of accomplishments when he rolled the 32nd perfect game of this year's tournament during his final game of singles at the National Bowling Stadium on May 27.
The 62-year-old right-hander added games of 170 and 187 for a 657 total to go along with 652 in team and 589 in doubles for a 1,898 all-events effort. Matt Weggen of Muscatine, Iowa, leads Regular Singles with 826 and Regular All-Events with 2,268.
"It's an entirely different feeling," said Chamberlain, who was inducted into the USBC Hall of Fame in 2005. "After coming here for 44 years and bowling all those games, it's unbelievable. This is a spectacle. You only get one shot a year, and you only bowl nine games, so it's a tough feat to do. I was a lot more nervous than normal. Usually, it doesn't bother me that much, but in this situation, there are a lot more nerves."
Chamberlain also has his sights set on two other milestones at the Open Championships, the 50-year Club and the 100,000-Pin Club.
"This is my 44th consecutive year, and I want to get to 50," said Chamberlain, who has knocked down 82,546 pins for a career average of 205.8. "I also would like to bowl long enough to get to 100,000 pins. I'm doing well. I've averaged about 206 for 44 years. Those are goals you never think of until all of a sudden you get there after all that time. Then, you look at the great bowlers who have already achieved those goals."
Also this week, Leo DiBenedetto (left) of Rancho Cordova, Calif., and Ryan May (right) of Sinking Spring, Pa., rolled 298 games on the tournament lanes.
Diandra Asbaty (right) of Chicago, a 13-time Team USA member, will hit the tournament lanes June 4-5 looking to add USBC Open Championships success to her growing list of career highlights.
Her team event will be broadcast live from the National Bowling Stadium on BOWL.com at 11:30 p.m. EDT on June 4.
