Mike Henry returns to Hammond, Ind. for PBA Senior Lake County Open

Defeating a pair of Hall of Famers makes triumph especially memorable for 2010 winner

2010PBASMikeHenry.jpgWinning the 2010 PBA Senior Lake County Open for his first career Senior Tour title was especially memorable for Senior Tour veteran Mike Henry of Brunswick, Ohio, considering the path he had to take to do it.

Henry (pictured left) will defend his title against approximately 100 of the world’s top senior players when the PBA Senior Lake County Open returns to Olympia Lanes in Hammond, Ind., Aug 8-11.

After a 10-year career on the Senior Tour with two previous-best finishes of second, Henry, at age 62, upset three consecutive favored players in the final rounds of last year’s event on his way to the title.

Tim Kauble of Marion, Ohio, was the title-match favorite after winning the PBA Golden Anniversary Senior Championship at Olympia Lanes two years earlier, but Henry was able to breeze to a 247-166 victory in the championship match.

2010PBASWayneWebb3.jpg2010PBASWalterRayWilliams.jpgOn his way to the title match, Henry defeated two of PBA’s all-time greats, eventual 2010 Senior Rookie of the Year and Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr. (left), and another Hall of Famer, Wayne Webb (right) of Columbus, Ohio, who would go on to become 2010’s Senior Player of the Year.

In the Round of 8, Henry defeated Webb 2-0 in a three-game match and then beat Williams in the semifinal match, 235-192.

“It has been a lot of hard work and it paid off,” said Henry after receiving the $8,000 first prize and eagle trophy. “There were 117 great bowlers in this tournament, but to beat Wayne Webb and Walter Ray? It was an experience I wouldn’t trade for anything.”

Mohr, who has won three of the last four events on the Senior Tour this year, currently has a commanding lead in the 2011 Senior Player of the Year race.

Among other notables entered as of Thursday are PBA Hall of Famers Tom Baker, Dale Eagle, Dave Soutar and Roy Buckley. Also competing will be Hammond’s own Kenny Parks (right), the winner of the 2008 USBC Senior Masters.

Qualifying will be conducted Tuesday and Wednesday Aug. 9 and 10 with eight-game rounds which will determine the top 32 players who will advance to match play beginning Thursday Aug. 11. Semifinal and championship rounds will get underway at 7 p.m. on Aug. 11. Practice and pro-ams will take place on Monday, Aug. 8.

PBA.com’s Xtra Frame video service will provide coverage beginning at 3 p.m. on Aug. 10 and all rounds on Aug. 11.
