Eight teams still undefeated at 2018 Intercollegiate Team Championships


Defending women’s champion McKendree was among the four women’s teams, along with four men’s teams, to remain undefeated after two rounds of match play at the 2018 Intercollegiate Team Championships (ITC) at Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln, Nebraska, on Thursday.

After qualifying as the fourth seed, McKendree topped Alabama-Birmingham, 4-1, in the best-of-seven Baker games match before sweeping Savannah College of Art and Design-Savannah, 4-0. Stephen F. Austin stayed unbeaten with victories over Maryland Eastern Shore (4-1) and Delaware State (4-2).

The other women’s teams remaining undefeated were Wichita State, with victories over Notre Dame-Ohio (4-1) and Sacred Heart (4-0), and Lindenwood, which beat Newman and St. Francis-Illinois by 4-2 scores.

McKendree‘s men’s team, the 2017 ITC runner-up, also remained unbeaten after 4-1 victories over Lindenwood and Midland. Wisconsin-Whitewater, an ITC semifinalist last season, beat Arizona State, 4-2, and then swept Wichita State.

Calumet, the nation’s top-ranked men’s team and the Fairview Heights sectional winner, posted victories over St. Ambrose, 4-1, and Webber International, 4-0, while Robert Morris-Illinois beat William Penn (4-1) and St. Francis-Illinois (4-0).

On Friday, the McKendree men’s team will face Wisconsin-Whitewater, and Calumet will take on Robert Morris-Illinois. In the women’s bracket, McKendree will meet Stephen F. Austin and Lindenwood goes against Wichita State.

All 16 men’s teams and 16 women’s teams started the day by bowling 24 Baker games to determine seeding for the match-play bracket.

In the men’s division, Webber International posted a 5,032 pinfall total, a 209.67 average, to lead the field. Wis.-Whitewater was second at 4,860 followed by McKendree (4,856) and Robert Morris-Illinois (4,837).

Delaware State, making its third ITC appearance, led the women’s field in qualifying with a 5,000-pinfall total, followed by Lindenwood (4,898), Wichita State (4,895) and McKendree at 4,804.

Match play resumes at 8:45 a.m. (Eastern) on Friday with elimination matches and will continue throughout the day to determine the teams who will compete for the Kerm Helmer Cup on Saturday.

The men’s and women’s championships matches, plus the semifinals and finals of the Intercollegiate Singles Championships, will take place Saturday and will be taped for broadcast on CBS Sports Network.

The women’s team finals will be taped Saturday at noon Eastern and will air May 9 at 8 p.m. Eastern on CBS Sports Network. The men’s team title match is set for 6:15 p.m. Eastern on Saturday and will be televised May 15 at 8 p.m. Eastern.

Teams earned their way into the ITC field by finishing in the top four at one of four sectional events held throughout the country in March.
