For the second consecutive year, France finished atop the medal tally as the 2018 Mediterranean Bowling Championships (formerly Mediterranean Challenge Cup) came to an end with the Masters finals Saturday, April 21, at Rollhouse Bowling Center in Ankara, Turkey.

French bowlers Amandine Jacques and Quentin Deroo swept the gold medals in masters and Lauriane Célié added a bronze medal to lead the medal tally after 10 disciplines with 5 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze medals, just shy of the 6-2-3 medal haul from Ljubljana, Slovenia, last year.

The French team (above right), Jacques, Célié, Deroo and Thibaut Lanos won the coveted mixed team title for the third year in a row and Célié won two more gold medals in singles and all-events.

Greece (left), medal tally leader in 2016, was the only other country with multiple gold medals finishing second in the medal standings with 3 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze medal.

Roros Stamatios and Vasileios Stefopoulos posted a new championship record for three games (1367) on their way to the gold medal in men’s doubles. Roros teamed with Martha Karatzoyla to win the gold medal in mixed doubles and averaged almost 220 for 24 games to win his third gold medal by 159 pins.

Elisa Primavera and Helga di Benedetto (left, l-r) defeated the Greek women, Karatzoyla and Syrmatenia Michailidoy, and French women, Jacques and Célié, to give Italy a gold medal in women’s doubles.

Justin Caruana Scicluna (right) started the MBC 2018 with victory in men’s singles to capture the lone gold medal for MBC powerhouse Malta.

Other countries who medaled in this championships were Slovenia, Turkey, Croatia and Spain.

The 21st Mediterranean Bowling Championships 2018 (formerly the Mediterranean Challenge Cup) was held from April 15-22 at Rollhouse Bowling Center, a 24-laner in Ankara, Turkey.

The Championships drew 44 bowlers, 22 men and 22 women, from 11 countries, Croatia, Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, San Marino, Slovenia, Spain, Tunisia and the host country Turkey. Each country was represented by a team of two female and two male competitors.

Men and women competed in separate divisions for gold, silver and bronze medals in Singles, Doubles, All Events and Masters as well as in Mixed Doubles and Mixed Team event.

The 22nd Mediterranean Bowling Championships will be held in April 2019 at a venue still to be determined.
